Help! Sandisk Ultra2 or Extreme3 for HD video

Hi,

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but I couldn't find anything useful. I am thinking of buying a Canon Rebel T1i soon. I want to know if a Sandisk Ultra 2 card will be sufficient for recording 720p HD video on the T1i or do I need to buy an Extreme 3.

Sandisk Ultra 2 - 15 Mb/s (16gb)
Sandisk Extreme 3 - 30 Mb/s (8gb)

I am getting the 16gb Ultra 2 and the 8gb Extreme 3 for the same price. So i really need to know if Ultra 2 will be sufficient then I need not spend extra on the Extreme 3. Help!

Can't help with which one will be better for recording video, as I have never tried it, I have a Mini-DV Camcorder I use when I want video. But, I do know the Extreme III will give you a much, much faster download onto your computer afterwards, as I have used both for still photos. I know this wasn't much help to your original question, but figured you might want to factor in the download speed as well.

The Ultra II should be sufficient - it keeps up with my 5DII's 1080p video recording just fine.

I have a Canon Vixia HF s100 HD camcorder and I use 32 gig Sandisk Ultra II cards for 1080p recordings without any problem.

Both cards doesn't make a big difference, but you rather have a fast cf card when transfering large video files to your computer

Get at least the Extreme III these days.
There's an Extreme IV coming out now also.

Most HD video asks for class 4 cards as a minimum. The Extreme III cards are Class 6. While the recording times won't necessarily be different the download times are very different. The Extreme III cards should save you lots of download times, especially with larger files.

These seem to be the good solid purchase for shooting HD video with say a 5DMKII?

i think my next card will be an extreme 3 as it's a good balance in speed and price.. i have a slower card equivelent of the ultra 2 right now and it works fine for video on my 5dII though..

At least one fellow had problems with other brand Class (6) that wouldn't keep up with his T1i. Canon recommended SanDisk Extreme III Class (6) and his problem went away.

With the other brand the buffer would fill up and the recording mode would shut down, he was losing video.

I have the T1i and SanDisk Extreme III 8GB Class (6) cards work fine. So that's what I buy. Right now one of my cards is the 20Mbps and the newest is the 30Mbps Edition. Either works just fine.

The ultra II's are fast enough, although the transfer to your computer will be slower. The Sandisk exteme III are in the sweet spot as far as price and speed are concerned. I'm actually very impressed with the PNY cards. They are faster and less expensive than the Sandisk extreme III. I used these very cheap ($24) 8gb Kingston cards with my 5D mark II and they handle video just fine.
