edit and save?

I am new using my G1. After downloading the pictures taken, I have edited the pictures on paint shop pro. I have noticed that after rotating an object etc and then saving the picture, the picture quality seems to have dropped. Can somebody please tell me how do I edit a picture and not lose any quality when I save? Thanks.
