Shooting from a canoe

I'm going to be taking a canoe out on a large pond this weekend to shoot a fishing derby this weekend. Any advice on caring for the camera while in a canoe other than don't tip over? Any ideas on protecting the camera from water while entering and leaving the canoe?

I always put my equipment into Ziplok bags and seal them. They are not completely water tights, but will stop any splashes from getting the equipment wet. Might also want to put something in the bottom of the boat to keep your bag off of the bottom. Water will happen.

P-E-L-I-C-A-N. worth every dollar, more if you ever really get the benefit of having your stuff in the worlds toughest camera case. get some aquatech covers and you will be there, get some desicant too.

I have used Pelican cases for over 20 years and on multi-week canoe trips at times. Mine have been floating with no damage to equipment inside.

When "in use" I tend to have the case in front of me on the floor of the canoe or on the packs with the lid unlatched, but closed, to keep out splashes, and then just open the lid for access. I do a lot of canoeing, and have no fear of tipping over in flat water, even with good waves, but splashing is always a possibility in a canoe. If you are not using the camera, just latch the lid and nothing will harm your stuff.

I have tried plastic bags, "dry bags", backpacks, camera bags, wrapping in rain gear, and none work as well as a decent sized Pelican case for ease of access, and absolutely nothing protects it better when the case is shut tight.

hey, I thought about this some more, and remembered what I used to do before I could afford much more than a canoe and a camera- get a cooler with a locking lid and foam insulation. they float, they are watertight, and after you get a Pelican case, you can keep beverages cold in them! It's garage sale season in the northwest, I bet I could get you a half dozen decent colemans for the price of one pelican right now- good luck.

Not much canoeing but I spend a lot of time at the lake...I just insured mine. Sat down with my agent and made sure "everything" would be covered, Even the Boneheaded moves.

Great peace of mind and pretty reasonable price also.

Sure I use Due caution when nessacary....But I don't worry about it at all! I bought the thing to use and if something happens they replace it.

While I have insurance on my equipment too, I like to think that you are looking after it as best you can. Remember, the "they" in, "they will replace it" is not some unknown rich corporation; the "they" you talk about is all the other photographers who buy insurance for their stuff.

Oh my...Now I feel bad that I made YOU pay for one windshield replacment over the last 9 years. Divide that over the 13 diffrent policys I currantly have......I hope I havent put an undue burden on you. :lol:
