Here is a shot I took for a friend (the pilot) at a local airshow. This was shot in bright midday sun with a 75-300 f4-5.6 lens.

The bright sun is something thats a problem in most air shows. Try something more interesting with the composition. The centered plane is just too boring, moving it to the side (rule of thirds) should improve it.
