I know Canon sells some very nice flashes for use in macro photography. My question is, what about 3rd party ring flashes?

For example, the ABR800 AlienBees™ Ringflash?

What are the pros and cons of that?

ring flash tends to produce "flat" light, you would be better with a standard flash gun with diffuser.
i and others use 430ex flash with home made diffusers

too bulky if I am looking at the right image. Agree with Phil - a 430ex or similar off camera via a lead like this
