My son thought I should try to layer two images together... It took about 10 minutes of playing to get this. I think the result was pretty fair. Any comments on how I could improve it?

it looks pretty awsome!
but since you asked, just a couple of thoughts:
1) the feather of the eagle outside of the flag is more contrasty than the face inside the flag. maybe reduce the opacity of the feathers will look better
2) make the eagle's face curve along the flag's wavy surface. :p

Hmm... I wonder if I have the skills to make the Eagle fit the wave of the flag... I'll have to play with that a little. Good idea.
Thanks, Jon.

I wonder if I have the skills to make the Eagle fit the wave of the flag... I think I saw a tutorial on that somewhere. They might have used the Warp filter. (?)

Photoshop is a lot of fun as well as a great tool for photographers.
Just try everything and have fun.
This started from a photo. Probably had more than a dozen layers and hours of playing.

PhotosGuy, I think Russell Brown has a tutorial on his web site for the waving flag trick. I'll check it out again and maybe even give it a try to see how it looks.
Marauder61, that picture is awesome! Very very cool.

Jon,
How was your work on the waving flag trick? I'd like to see how it turned out!

How the heck do people manage to cut certain parts out of pics and put them on other pics? I think I get the idea on how to move the pics to other pics, but I can't figure out how you got the eagle onto the flag without the eagle appearing all chopped up from free-hand cropping, lol

Hey Marauder61, NICE job!
How the heck do people manage to cut certain parts out of pics and put them on other pics? I think I get the idea on how to move the pics to other pics, but I can't figure out how you got the eagle onto the flag without the eagle appearing all chopped up from free-hand cropping, lol Let me echo your LOL! You probably think that's a simple question, right? ;)
Try the Filter > Extract way first & see if it will work for what you're trying to do.
If not, the best way I've found to cut things out is here:

Go down to:

Or you can try your hand at using the pen tool to perform the extraction. It takes a lot of practice but it can be very effective.

Is this what you want to do, or did I misunderstand the effect you are after?
For definition picture "A" is the main picture, "B" is the one you want to paste into "A". Select the area in "A" (the flag) that you want to cover with pic "B" and then save the selected area as a mask. Go to picturec "B" and load the mask, and position it over the area you want to use (the eagle) and copy the selected area to clipboard. Go to Pic "A" and paste the clipboard into it, position the overlay and play with the 0pacity of the layers to get the right effect.

I think it would be better with the eagle off the flag, to busy otherwise.
