I used the 430EX II. It was bulky, but it had bounce and swivel. If I was buying it today I'd probably buy the 270EX unless I needed the 430EX.

I was using the 420EX on my SX1 Saturday (smallest flash I have):

Yes, that's the real Hope Diamond. In its case at the Smithsonian. And that's the full, uncropped, shot resized to fit here. I wouldn't have gotten this with anything but a P&S with external flash and fold-out screen except by "spray-and-pray". There were mobs around the display case, so between the crowd and the case I had to hold the camera up angled down and compose on the flip-out screen. The 420EX gave me increased flash-lens separation and made the angle of the flash to the case even more extreme, thus less likely to reflect back into the picture.

Focus could be a tad better, but the central column the diamond is resting on rotates, so it may have moved a tad between when I focused and when I shot. It actually pauses every 90 deg. of rotation, but square-on isn't the optimal angle to shoot it from as then you get lots of light bounced straight back into the lens - so oodles of flare.

The 420EX is the older model. It's going for $110-$150 in Marketplace here (and going quite fast, I might add).
