Just peeked at PowerShot S2 review (http://www.dpreview.com/news/0504/05042201canons2is.asp) - looks quite empressive.

But, not having hot shoe and being raw-less, I am not sure if it would be my pick.

I'm sick and tired of these compacts that don't go wider than 36/38mm. The IS feature is very worthwhile, of course, ideal for travelling.

If Canon could make the G7 with all that the G6 has plus IS and starting at 28mm, life would be great...........

Naaah ... looks as ugly as the Powershot S1 to me

Best regards,
Andy

Who cares if it's ugly? I agree that the lack of a hot shoe is a big drawback. But what a consumer cam! EVF gives you SLR equivalence, 5 MP is plenty, 12x zoom with image stabilization is a lifesaver for travel, and it finally gives you a true video camera in the same package as a great still unit. It even has stereo sound.

I'm really encouraged by this camera. I'd buy one if I had infinite funds. Lacking that, I'll wait until my G3 is long in the tooth, by which time Canon will be making a crossover between a true SLR and this thing. It'll be called the EOS 40 and I'll be in love with it.

it would be cool if they do a pro 2 or similar model with IS, faster continuous shooting mode, less vignetting, digic II processor, and most of all, better performance in dark environments. I could even
live with a little less noise at higher iso settings :)

Nah... they would kill the S2 and possibly even the Pro-1 if they made a camera like this. Their marketing guys wouldn't allow them to do it, even if they could (and they can).

I suppose.

It's not too much to ask that the next G camera have IS, though.

EVF gives you SLR equivalence....

Shudder ... I personally think that a major advantage of the G series is that it has a REAL viewfinder and not that surveillance camera emulation that some people actually prefer for composing a shot.

But that might just be me.
