View Full Version : Will buying a flash be worthwhile??

Hi there guys, just having a battle with myself wether or not buying a flash is a must.
I want to start to get into macro (sick of flat light)
and also portrait work.
What do you think?? will a flash open up my world?
Looking at the 430

any thoughts

I would say it would be a whole new experience. After buying a flash myself, I could experiment with light for portraits how I wanted. Using off camera became a reality and never looked back.

It may be another learning curve but one that would be worthwhile learning as soon as possible. :)

Amen to that. The flash was THE best photographic accessory that I've bought.

I would have to agree. Flash allows you to capture images that you wouldn't normally be able to capture.

Flash will open new doors, but keep your expectations in line with what you have. On camera, which a single 430EX II will allow, will help in many circumstances (i.e., event shooting, outdoor shooting, etc.) but you will find it limiting when wanting to do more serious portraits. This is when many shooters find themselves going to multiple off camera lights.

Regardless, getting a flash is always a good thing. Below is a great thread on what can be done with a single flash.

I agree on checking out that thread. Especially page 6 & 13. Some impressive portraits on those pages.

Without light, there is nothing to photograph. So yes, a flash will be a great asset.
