My 50mm F1.8 isn't cutting it, so I decided to replace it...

Canon 50mm F1.4, with hood
Canon 70-200 2.8 IS (while I was there I figured I might as well)
Sandisk 2GB Ultra II (you can never have too much memory - total 6GB now!)

This is on top of my order last week, which was a Manfrotto tripod, 2GB CF, Pro-T, and other little bits and pieces... this is my MOST EXPENSIVE HOBBY EVER! But it's also the one I enjoy the most by far, so it's worth it :D

Now I just need B&H to re-open and ship me my order, which should be next Monday, but it'll be at least a week before it arrives... but the anticipation is half the fun!

Best regards,

Canon ought to give this forum's members a little gratuity....we sure egg each other on and Canon reaps the monetary benefits:)
Congrats Tim.... I love my 50/1.4..

Thanks everyone :) I will post a pic of it, it'll be with my little A70 though, I "only" have one nice camera! I've been wanting the 2.8 IS for a while, I got a good tax refund so I thought now's my chance :)

The 50/1.8 is an awesome lens, don't get us wrong. But the bokeh isn't as buttery smooth as the 50/1.4, and that little extra speed helps sometimes. Oh, and USM is way faster at focussing.

After all that, I still love my 50/1.8, it's a steal @ $70.

Wow! No wonder the 50/1.8 wasn't making the grade if it needs to be replaced with the 50/1.4 AND the 70-200/2.8IS!

The recent posts about the bokeh between the 50mm lenses has been an eye opener. But what do you expect for $70?

Congratulations and have fun.

Have a look at this (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=66959) and this (http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=66835)

I'll have no excuse after this - if I can't take a good photo it'll be my fault, not the equipment!

If your big box of goodies squashes my 70-200 f4L (coming from the same place), you're in trouble  But if Customs is so busy working out the tax on your box that they let my box through - then you're okay

Heh heh, UPS does the customs clearance, it's usually done pretty quickly. Customs doesn't actually do any checking, it's all done by agents.

What part of the country are you in lancea?

What part of the country are you in lancea?
Upper Hutt. Yes, I am fairly familiar with the way the Customs charging is done, as my never decreasing mortgage testifies. How I long for a return to the days when the courier companies weren't so efficient at enforcing the rules - it used to be a lottery whether you paid for imports that exceeded the limit. But it looks like you're doing a better job than me at financing Helen's overseas trips

You use the 70-200 that much? How strong are your arms? I imaging the Tamron 28-75 will stay on my camera most of the time, or the 50 1.4 for low light, but the 70-200 will be great when I want to stay out of the way.

I do a lot of upper body weights already, but i'll add in some more specifically for my camera holding muscles! :)

They'll arrive about 5 business days after B&H reopen and get rid of their backlog - could be another week and a half before they arrive, though maybe a bit less.

I called B&H to check the status of the order this morning - turns out it was "on hold" for some reason, their website didn't say this and they hadn't gotten in touch with me yet. Luckily with that call they told me and "unlocked" the order, so it should ship tomorrow and my new toys should be here by about this time next week :)

After all that, I still love my 50/1.8, it's a steal @ $70.

I dunno, I'd never have described it as awsome. It's very good value for money, and better optically than the consumer zooms people typical start on. However as primes go its not that great. Maybe better than the 20 or something but trumped by almost every other prime in the line up, and of course the L zooms.

I realise that these are a lot more expensive, but that gets back to my first point. It's not an awesome lens, just very good value for money.

tim
3rd of May 2005 (Tue), 18:05
It's very good value for money,

I don't think it's good value for money, I stopped using it because it's focusing isn't accurate, so it's a waste of $70 for me. I'll resell it and get all my money back here in NZ, or maybe even make a small profit on it.

As you PM'd me 3 months ago, with the 50mm 1.8 details. Did you order more than a couple originally and sell them as profit? :D

I'm eager to see what happens, and when you come up around Auckland, I'll take that new weight off your shoulders. :p

Nah just bought the one, people already sell 'em on trademe and get more than the cost from the states, but only by a little.

It's no big deal when I take off the tripod collar and mounting plate. Just anoying when it's dangling off your neck.

Isn't ironic that Canon Manufacture these lens in Japan. That ia across the Pacific Ocean. Ship it to the USA. Just to have shipped back over the Ocean to New Zealand. What a trip. I Live in NYC and I can't get myself to cross the East River to go to B&H.HA!!!

tim
6th of May 2005 (Fri), 00:44
Yeah, it is ironic. What's even crazier is it will cost about NZ$2600 including shipping, customs duties, and GST (I get the GST back), if you buy it new in NZ it costs NZ$4000 or so. There's just no logic in that. Sure it's a smaller economy, but the difference is huge.

I remember an idea called "societal cost" from university. The cost to society of sending it the whole way around world compared with sending it directly is much higher, and causes more pollution.

My newest "toys" turned up today, yay! :) Damn that 70-200's a heavy lens, I used one 6 months ago but I forgot how heavy it was. I thinky the monopod will come in handy for that sucker! Now I just have to get them home and put them on the camera - didn't want to bring out an expensive camera and lens at work, people might start to think i'm overpaid ;)

I made a decent profit when I sold mine (went for around $115 with a few filters I was never going to need again). I didn't ever have focusing problems with it, it was just boring. Didn't have the life of my 85 or the broader use of my 24.
