I'm finding the manfrotto 190XPROB with the 322RC2 too heavy for me for hiking.
Having the tripod on my rucksack makes it very easy for me to overbalance (backwards) when trying to get up.
The two together weigh about 2.5kg.

I have a 5D, 24-105 & 70-200 2.8 IS.

Any suggestions? - I havnt been able to find anything much lighter - I know I may not, because I have a heavy camera & lens to support!

Have you looked at one of their carbon fibre models?

Just have done - but still may be too heavy & quite long folded down.
Have been looking now at Benro Travel Angel kit - which is getting good reviews- and about 50% of weight my current tripod & head

Excuse the slightly cheeky answer but lean further forward while getting up.

My rucksack and tripod together weigh around 7kg (weighed last month for flying/ luggage reasons) and i dont have a problem with the weight.

I have the 190CX3 with the 488rc2 head and i dont find it heavy at all. I guess it comes down to one question - how steady do you want your camera to be? The 109CX3 gives be a very stable platform while being light enough to carry AND strudy enough to mount a 400D/grip/flash/long lens without a problem.

For your camera and lenses the one series C-168 and B-0 ball mount should be very nice. The C-068 is going to be a little light in my opinion.

Looks like age & being a female is against me here - (I'm 55) :).
Not a cheeky question at all - I'm just not very fit !

Just checked which tripod I have - looks like I need new glasses - its a 190XPROB- not carbon fibre which I think yours is?

Just weighed all my kit - comes to about 10 kg.
Bag is a Lowpro Flipside 400.

gitzo mountaineer tripods + markins ballheads... it'll cost you upwards of $1000 USD to upgrade though..

Yeah mine is the carbon fibre and it does weigh considerably less than the alu version (or at least it feels like it does).

The extra 3 kg would probably make a difference esp if you are carrying it for a long time.

Oh and im not very fit either (and i dont have the excuse of age! Im only 36!)

Check out the Feisol carbon fiber traveler tripods. I have the 3441s. Here is a LINK (http://reallybigcameras.com/Feisol/Traveler_Class.htm) that I bought mine from.

This tripod folds up small, is very light and strong, and has a pretty good reputation around here. It's a nice cheaper alternative to the Gitzos (note - I'm not claiming it's a replacement for the Gitzos, which I hope to own some day).

I have pretty much the same setup as you and really like my Benro C-269. Check out my review here http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=664575.

I also owned the Manfrotto 190XPROB for 1 week prior to owning the Benro, but found the Manfrotto too large/heavy for my needs.
