Junkyard study

I took this set at a local junkyard several months back. I've always had a fascination with abandoned buildings and items. It's interesting to think that at one time, all these things were new. They were bought for a purpose - though they do not serve that purpose anymore.

The Car - this grabbed my attention right away, partly because of the "suddenness" of the impact, partly because it tells a bit of story. I just hope nobody was hurt from the "accident." Note the dirt growing up around the tire.

The Grider - I've used bench grinders many times but I've never looked at one the way I looked at this one. Firstly, it's huge - a monsterous shop tool that demands respect. Secondly, I was engrossed by the texture. The wheel itself is very rough, full of pits and gouges. The steel holder, frame, and grate show signs of age, but nothing like the grittiness of the wheel.

The Room - This storage shed is about to fall over. The roof has more holes than a block of swiss cheese in a shootout. It's so bad that the termites learned to drive to Home Depot's lumber department just to stay alive.

The lighting is what go me in this shot. It's all natural lighting, but the way it comes through is what's so interesting.

The hoist - I'm starting to like chains more than I used to. I shot this one as a silhouette using a short shutter speed. It really made it "pop" from the rest of the scene.

These are very nice compositions. Many b&w's don't have the ability to make me stop and look at them, but that's not the case with these. The exposures are just right (the silhouette was a good decision), the dof is well-controlled, and the perspective is interesting. The only one that doesn't live up to the others is the shed. I feel like that one is too contrasty, though interestingly, I don't feel that way about the hoist.

Love the first one - I'm not a "car" person but for some reason I think these old abandoned hulks make for really good subjects.
