I am about to get a EOS 20D and as I know very little about the digital world but am learning fast, my question is do digital cameras write the exposure details (shutter speed etc) to the picture file ?
If they don't then this would surely be a great thing to have

Unless the 20D is mysteriously different then my D60, 10D and 1DsMkII;
Yes it will write all sorts of "metadata" in an attached EXIF file to the image at the time it creates the image.

Including; shutter speed, f-stop (aperture), focal length, whether you used a flash or not, in some cases how far the focus point was from the camera, and a lot of other information telling you what you camera was set on and what it did. In addition if you set the camera up correctly (need to read the manual) you can put the owner's name and contact info on with each image as it comes out of the camera.

Metadata = a term used for the information ABOUT the data (the image in this case) versus the image itself.

D60 wrote the EXIF data into the file also.

Warrick,

You can view this EXIf information using PhotoShop or other photo enhancement packages, or I also like a little free program that I found on the internet called "Exifer" - you can download it for free here:

I like exif viewer (also free program.) You have it open a folder of pictures and it displays all the exif data in chart form. Nice when you are looking for things like at which point this afternoon did I switch to ISO 400.
