View Full Version : Haunted forest

It's not really a haunted forest :-) It's actually a place I find very peaceful. However, for this photo I tried to do something different. I have heaps of peaceful looking photos of this location, so I tried to take a photo that evoked a different emotion. So I tried to find lines and shapes different to my normal smooth curves and peaceful rocks. I found the lines, I just don't know if the photo "works".

PS , the white sky is mist.

hope you dont mind my take. Didn't think the green was giving it much of a creepy factor, lowered the saturation, raised the hue to a more purplish, and lowered the brightness a bit.

The Creepy factor has definitely increased with the above PP. It makes that tree in the background a little more noticeable.
Good height to hang someone off.

Uhhh...OK....I think time for me to get out of these woods and go back to the Bird forum. :p Nice shot, BTW and the PP does make it look creepy.

I think I see Gollum hangin' out just behind that tree.

LOL to the max, was thinking of doing the same thing, but for my hanging someone comment.......

Alas, you are just too fast...

LOL at the gollum!

Thanks Stutterbug for the PP! It certainly gives the photo more of the mood I was trying to capture. I think that sometimes my brain stops working when I look at my own photos  I will reprocess the photo using your edit as a guide if that's ok, I like it a lot.

While the contrast is good, for me the bright fog doesn't look really spooky. Was that all around, or just into the sun? I'm also persistently bothered by the way the foreground rocks are chopped into: needs a step or two back, a wider angle etc..

Not great results, but it's certainly a fun one to try out a few filters on: just clicking through some with default settings, for me PS CS4's "dark strokes" and "chalk and charcoal" make it more ominous. A version with a dark strokes layer at 50% opacity is attached for your amusement. The GIMP's not light on filters either, especially with G'MIC.

Cheers, Tony

lol, Ronen. I will never be able to get that image out of my mind when I return to the location now, hehe.

Thanks Tony. The bright fog was all around, and by the end of my shoot it was also dripping off my camera and tripod. The sun was just over my right shoulder. I might go back when the mist returns and see what I can come up with by moving back a little. Unfortunately 17mm (on my cropped sensor) just doesn't ever seem wide enough for my liking when I take photos inside forests. I am looking at getting a 10-22 or a wide prime. The other solution might be to buy a full frame body, but I can't bring myself to do that until I exhaust the learning opportunities from my 40D, which might take years :-)

I like that effect as well, Tony. Now I am torn... I will have to make two images, one with the desaturation and another with something similar to your edit. I've just checked the weather report and I think that mist may return this afternoon. If so I will go out and see if I can fix the cut off rock issue. In the mean time I will try and incorporate everyone's great edits (umm, I am at work, but I can always say that editing my photos enhances my creativity... can't I?) :-)
