I'm looking for some cheap way of storing images during my trip to Europe. Earlier recommended storage devices (FlashTrax and Epson) are out of the question due to their prices. I will have access to the PC and was thinking about getting CF reader/writer. Could you recommend one that's reliable?

Thanks.

I went to Europe last summer. It was a great trip. I'm sure you will have lots of fun.

If you want to save some money and space, you could just use your USB cable and attach that to the computer. That's what I ended up doing on my European trip. It can be pretty slow though if you have something like a 300D.

As for card readers, I've been using a Sandisk USB 2.0 Compact flash reader for over a year now with no problems.

Well, yes... I can transfer images to my Mom's PC there, but after selecting the keepers and doing some editing I need to transfer them back to CF card to take them back to USA or a photo place there to print. Does your Sandisk CF reader also writes to it? I have found Sandisk CF reader/writer and will probably go with it anyway. Thanks.

Well, if you stop in Rome, let me know. I can download and burn CD/DVD for whatever you need, no problem. Of course, no payment is required :)

One option - stop at a local photo/lab store and ask them to burn you 2 CD's from your memory. Put one in your luggage, mail one to yourself at home. Other option = cheaper storage - I have a 60gb X-Drive II. Cost about $200. More than enough for a vacation. Ok, you don't get to review the pix but it is portable and inexpensive.

If your mother's computer can write a CD or you are only going to keep the good ones and dump the rest then the Sandisk CF card reader should work very good (be sure to get the USB 2.0 one).

If the computer has the correct drivers then it should treat the CF card in the CF card reader as an external drive allowing you to read and write to it.

Please note though, if you write back to the card, you are unlikely to be able to view the images in the camera, but should be able to use when you get home.

The reason a portable drive is recommended is unless you can write a CD at your mother's then you can only bring home as many pictures as you have cards for. Although I suppose your mother could email you the pictures as well if you and she have the bandwidth to move the pictures (a dial up modem is not going to be worth it for more then a couple of pictures). So if you only have 2 CF cards, and you take 4 cards worth of pictures something has to go unless you can send or write a CD without a portable drive.
