Yeah, I had some focus issues today at the airshow that I'm still trying to figure out. Maybe my lens microadjustment was off for long distances or something. I'm kinda bummed out about it because I've got a LOT of otherwise great pics that are slightly out of focus.

300mm with a x1.4?

Yep, was shooting both with and without the x1.4. Had issues both ways. I didn't have problems with shooting static planes on the ground. Was using center point focus, AI servo which I use all the time for sports but it sure didn't work for me today.

1/640 is pretty slow for shooting jets on a sunny day. I wouldn't use the extender either unless you are unusually far from the flight line. I found it better to go with the lens alone and crop. The 300 f/4L is an amazingly sharp lens, I'd look more towards your settings. Have you done any PP? Most of these look like they would be fine if you ran the RAW file through some sharpening software or PS. Some of them could use a little more contrast and definition as well (IMHO) and that will help with the appearance of sharpness.

Thanks a lot. I've watched them down at Camp Atterbury in Indiana do live strafing runs with the 30mm on the target range. The noise scares the holy sh!# out of you even when you know it's coming.

I have video which I took over 20 years ago! I talked to a friend at work who is in the National Guard and I'm going to go back again in July and watch. I think the last time I was there was in 1987 or so and also saw A-7's and A-37s which tells you how long ago it was!. I'll definitely bring the camera along when I do go.
