Frame ruins the shot imo

It's an exceptionally good portrait. However, I would like the shadows to be darker, so that they create more 3-dimensionality. Whatever you were using as fill light could have been a little less.

Was this lighting better?

Cute little doggie! :) Suggest cloning out the label on the Softsoap though.

No. Now it's backlit.

I'm afraid that just changing things at random is not effective. As Chris says, now it's backlit, and you should be able to see that yourself.

We on this side of the process cannot see your lighting sources - only their effect.

The subject needs both a modeling light source (illuminates and creates shadows on the subject), and it also needs a fill light to soften the shadows, making them less harsh. That explanation assumes that we are talking about a basic two light system - the key light above and to one side of the subject), and the fill light shining directly into the face of the subject (for softening the shadows created by the key light).

This is only one possible combination out of thousands, but it is simple, well known and effective.
