RC Flying.
There was(is) an event in town called Wings For Kids. Its a benefit for the Kosair Charities. I went to go cover it for the paper. Limited on what I can shoot since Im still giving this D3 a run through its paces and only have the 70-200. Really need more reach for this stuff. Heres a few

At first glance I was going to say that your composition sucks, but a second look made me think that these pictures just plain suck. I'm sure most people here ( at least I ) think you're a good photographer, and these look like rookie shhtuff.
1,2,3,4,6, and 8 have no forward room for the subject to move into. The crops are just too tight. I know that's kind of an artistic opinion, but even with a crop that suits my eye, they're still boring. When there's no facial emotion in a picture, the has to be something else. What is it that's supposed to grab my attention here?
If you look at the guys who shoot air shows, you'll see they shoot at about 1/320 SS to get a prop blur. On an R/C plane, I have no idea what speed would be needed, but it would be nice to see. You've got people in your shots, but no emotion. Where's the shot of the kid smiling as he looks skyward? Or the dad grimacing over a crash landing? Give us something...
You're better than these. Just being harsh, like you like it. -John

Good series.
The second is funny the difference between a child and adult is only in the size of the toy.

Clearly I'm kidding. ;)

The UFO is what the picture was taken of. . . .it was just. . . . using stealth technology. . . . thats my story and I'm sticking too it.

Meh. People just dont like me because I give CC straight and dont pat people on their back. I suppose that was just Johns attempt(?) at trying. If he took the time (or just gave it some thought), he would realize that 99% of airshow photography is done with the planes flying out of the frame (and good for reason). There is no reason to leave a bunch of negative space for them to "fly into". As you can see by the example I posted, it just looks like a waste. Hell, you dont have to believe me, just run a GIS for 'airshow' and look at the pictures that come up.
FWIW, the shots are plane. There isnt anything special about them. Right now, Im just testing some new equipment and that involves a lot of shooting wide open to determine exactly how finicky the equipment might actually be.

Funny how some can dish it out but when it's tossed back at 'em they can't handle it.
I can't believe how big those suckers are. My step-grandfather has a couple I thought were huge but they're dwarfed by those.

It is quite hilarious, isnt it?

What amazed me about them is how light they are. Youll see guys not just rolling them like that, but picking up an entire plane sometimes. I suppose with just a little engine though, theyve got to be pretty light.

That's cuz balsa defies the laws of gravity. Two ounces of balsa plus two ounces of balsa is still two ounces of balsa. :D

Haha I wish. From what I gathered, it wasnt actually operational. The guy still had some work to do to it apparently. The helicopters were easily the most impressive thing though (IMO). I dont know how they make them fly the way they do without getting the controls all crossed up. Its pretty amazing. Unfortunately, with just 200mm on full frame, I didnt have the reach to really make many pictures out of them :(

I've got a neighbor down the street who flys R/C and he has a very large Huey in firefighting colors as well as a few left over shards from a very large B-17 which got cheese gratered through a light stanchion on it's maiden flight.

Haha Im just commenting on how people say that.
Theyll always see the pictures and say something like, 'Hey your camera takes nice pictures' ...
Its along the lines of telling an author that their pen writes nice books, or telling a carpenter that his hammer builds good houses. It just gets me every time.
I am fortunate enough to have a nice camera but these pictures could have easily been taken with just about anything. The light was out in abundance that day. Hell, the pictures probably would have turned out better with a 'lesser' crop body camera just for the added reach!

I see you have a D3. I really like how the Nikon's I've seen perform, especially low noise at higher iso's. My friend has a D300, and I've got a 40D. His shots not only seem cleaner, but brighter at the same iso. He's offered to lend me his camera for an event, but I'm afraid I'd end up making a costly brand conversion out of jealousy.

You know...(this might end up being a little long and a little off topic)
I own a MkIII and a 5D. Im borrowing the D3 and Nikkor 70-200 from Nikon.
I too am amazed at how well the Nikon works and I LOVE the color that comes out of the camera. Im extremely happy with how accurately it focuses, how little PP is needed, and, surprisingly, the ergonomics of it once I got used to it.
Nikon cameras seem to have a lot of nice features that Canon dont (like CLS, a true PROGRAMMABLE auto-ISO, a lot of re-configurable function buttons...). However, there are also a few things that may ultimately keep me from switching...
Their lens lineup. Its limited, its old, and its expensive. At the same time, their 70-200 (which with Canon is my 'workhorse' lens if I ever had one) is unacceptably soft on the edges of a full frame camera. And Im not talking the extreme outer edges...Im talking like using a focus point thats on the edge of the AF sensor, and no matter how many times you check to make sure its 'in-focus', it always comes out soft.
There is a little of a double edged sword with them and their low light capability. Yes, it is amazing in low light but the images never quite have the bite that the Canons do. Sure, you can resize it to 800x533, sharpen the daylights out of it, and walk away with something respectable, but Id rather have that bite at larger resolutions as well and I cant seem to get that with the D3. In the end, I think I personally prefer the sharper noisy image over the slightly duller less-noisy image. Even if you try to process the NEF file, you still never get the same bite as the Canon images AND!, if you process a high ISO NEF, the noise is horrible. Im talking gigantic red pits in the image that cannot be NR'ed out through any program.
The final nail in the coffin is that as nice as the D3 is, I know that in a matter of time, there will be a MkIV out that will make the Nikon look silly and thats what Ill really want. Also, as far as the 'color' of the Nikon goes, just download the Canon Picture Style Editor and play around with it until you find one you like. Problem solved ;)
