Just curious if any of you are using a Fluid Video head on your tripods with the 5DMKII?
I like some of these hand held ala StediCam Merlin things, but wondering if any one uses a tripod and fluid video head as well?

they all should if they want to pan and tilt smoothly. google manfrotto/bogen fluid tripod head, they're some decent fluid tripod head.
if you dont have the 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS or 24-105mm f/4.0 IS, invest in one bc it will help you w/ hand-held a ton. 24-105mm is probably the best lens for video if you want to just to do hand-held. it wont be as smooth as the Merlin but footage will become very usable. another way is to invest in shoulder mount but this is just too cumbersome.
Welcome to video world, very exciting stuff.

Yes.
I used a Manrotto 503 head for years.
I recently upgraded to a Sachtler DV6SB head.
It was like going from a Hyundai to a Mercedes.
The Bogen is good for the money...but far from good.
When purchasing things that don't go obsolete...buy the best.
I will easily have this Sachtler for 20 years...
Keep in mind though, I shoot video for a living...
and my Sachtler is overkill for the 5DMKII, but it works well with it, and everything up to broadcast size...

The Sachtler DV6SB mentioned above is very good, but OTT expensive if you don't use it that often.
I use the newer 501 (the "HD" one I think) for my XL2. It's good enough for what I do (shoot events mainly).
Can't tell you about the 5Dmkii though (never used it for a serious video).
ChrisMc73

The Sachtler DV6SB is discontinued on the B&H site, and way out of budget, but I agree with Bill, on paying for what you get kind of thinking. I'm usually not one to go real cheap. I think for my uses, it might be way overkill as well.
What would be a good middle of the road fluid head to consider?
I'm leaning towards a Gitzo leg set, Series 1, 2, or 3, but not sure yet.

Do you have any links to videos you've shot with that config?
Or pictures of your setup to share? I'd love to see it! :D

501 will work much better. if you shoot w/ telephoto, get a longer plate to balance the load.
remember that video tripod head has to be balance not like photography where you just slap it on and do nothing about it.

I guess I forgot to mention I have a 24-70 f/2.8 L, that might make a difference in what you all suggest?

That libec is good for video, but wouldn't be a good all in one solution would it, for stills too? Was trying to find just a head I could attach to whatever legs I end up getting...this one looks geared way more toward just video? I might have failed to meantion I'm not a pro either, just a noob, who wants to try some creative stuff...and learn. This one might be overkill for me at this stage.

if that's the case, just buy the 501hdv head w/ 3/8" female end thread, standard for photo tripods.
mid-level and professional grade video tripod head uses ball and bowl config.

Thanks Trey, so if I just get that head and the 3/8" female end, I can attach it to a Gitzo or Manfrotto leg set, and have a semi suitable rig to do some basic shots?
Trey T

yeah, the 501hdv has the 3/8" female threaded hole. just simply attach it to your photo tripod and call it done.

Why do you say that? Whats the difference in the two? Why don't you think the 503 is needed for the 5DMKII?
bluemotion

501 is smaller and works well with the 5dII the 503 would work also but it's overkill and more expensive... but yea.. if you are shooting with a long reaching lens that has it's own mounting point then use the tripod mounting point on the lens... if you are using a 24-70 just mount from bottom of camera but towards the back of the mounting plate of the fluid head so it balances better.
ChrisMc73

Difference is that one is made for big heavy cameras, which the 5Dmkii isn't.
You can spend more if it makes you feel better. :p
But if you've seen the XL2 (which I use a 501 for) you'll see the 501 more than good enough for your tiny 5Dmkii ;)
Unless you plan on mounting a 500, 600, 800mm lens on it that is. Even then, the 501 will probably still be OK for you.

For my 500 f4 or Sigmonster + TCs, I use a Manfrotto 516 fluid head.... even with the 516's huge size, I feel it's still a wee bit underspec'ed capacity-wise for such lenses. :)

The more serious you get/experience you have with video, the more you will appreciate good heads.
I mostly use:
-a 701 RC2, which I find "okay" for travel/hiking;
-a Libec THM20, which is (surprisingly??) a little smoother, light and good for travel/hiking (but the legs are a little flimsy);
-and a 503HDV- which is not a Sach, 516 or high-end Libec, but is pretty good, especially for "serious" stuff, or with longer lenses/wildlife. I've never owned a 501 or 501HDV. I've used a few 501-series heads and liked them but decided to go for the 503HDV and am very happy about that decision. You might want to do a little research on the video boards, for example cinema5d or dvinfo.
Having qr plates that work with any other heads you have is definitely a bonus. I ended up buying a ball head (the National Geographic/Manfrotto) that takes the same plate as the 503.
A lot of experienced people find heads are (much?) more important with video than with stills. It depends on your shooting style and subject matter. My first film was shot with a 128, and I was underwhelmed with its performance but it (mostly) did the job. I haven't used it since the day I got the 701.
If you can, try/rent before you buy.

Ok so whats the difference in the 501HDV and the 701HDV? Which one is newer?
I've narrowed down my choice to one of these two heads for my 5DMKII video work.
Do they come with the camera plate or do I need to pick out a longer one for the 5DMKII, and which one(s) should I consider?
I will be attaching it to a Gitzo 3541LS tripod with GS5121LV Leveling Base.

different model has different load capacity. 701 has about 8lbs, 501 has about 13lbs. I would get the 701hdv.
since DSLR will always be front-heavy due to lens, you need to get a longer plate to balance the load.

Actually B&H says the 701HDV holds 9.5 lbs...
Small and lightweight, the Bogen 701HDV Pro Fluid Video Mini Head is capable of accommodating payloads up to 9.5 lbs, and was designed principally to support the latest digital video equipment, including Mini DV and prosumer/professional grade HDV camcorders.
• Ergonomics
The 701HDV has locks and knobs that allow for a more solid grip and better control.
• Fluidity
This head offers updated fluidity from improved internal fluid cartridges.
• Updated
This small head offers a double pan-bar roset and a bigger sliding plate for better center of gravity adjustments.
Is the weight suport limit the ONLY difference? Is there anything else to consider besides that and price?
The 701HDV is less expensive $128 vs. the 501HDV $185.
So which longer plate do I need for the 5DMKII and a 24-70 lens?
I was thinking all I needed was the 701HDV, I don't have over 8 lbs of camera/lens right now and then I saw someone post some pictures of this exact tripod/leveling base/fluid head setup, and it makes a great looking rig.

I use 501hdv w/ all primes so I was able to get away w/ the stock plate. not too sure about your heavy 24-70, try your stock plate out first. you might be able to get away w/ it
I have never use 701hdv so I can't comment on that. it has the same features w/ both tilt/pan friction and counterbalance spring.
leveling base can be very useful when you shoot on a slope.

701hdv is a ANOTHER model, came out around 2005 or 2006. the original 501 has been around for about 6-7yrs now. 501hdv came out about the same time as 701hdv or the canon HV20, ~ 2006.
note that 501 is much bigger than 701 in size or dimension.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=workaround.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=556159&is=REG
Do I need to buy anything else to attach the 5DMKII to this head?
And do I need to buy anything else to attach the 701HDV to the Gitzo leveling base, so that I get what we have here:
http://tealic.la.coocan.jp/gallary/Tripod/GT3541LS/019.jpg
It looks like there is an extra long plate that others have mentioned for me to get to help balance out the 5DMKII and my 24-70 f/2.9 L lens...and there appears to be a quick release clamp there too?
The 701HDV says it comes with this...
Included
Fluid Head
501PL
Pan Bar
2-Year Warranty + Additional 3-Years after Registering Online or by Mail
I guess the 501PL is what will attach to the bottom of my 5DMKII?
I just want to make sure that if I purchase just the 701HDV, that I have everything I need to get my camera mounted on it?

that redrock follow focus is the first version they made, not that the new one is any better. that's a pretty good follow focus but old design, same as the new ones.
noticed how his FFocus is oriented in a way for right-hand focus-pulling. that's bc canon's focus ring can be very close to the body. this is the reason why I say old design, old gearbox.
not really my first pick for follow-focus. check Cavision follow focus. their design eliminates the problem.
check www.freshdv.com. there's a vid of the comparison, not sure if cavision is on there.

for the rod-support system, the best one for the money is cavision, bar-none. many ppl believe it's a suckie product but have no idea why it's sucks.
to me their design is very simple and very effective, much better than all of the other ones. the only reason why other brands are highly prized is bc of great marketing.

Just a few more questions I swear...
There are like 8 different packages of rails on that page, can you tell me which ones you went with?
Did you need 3 different sizes of the microLens Gears or did you order all the same size? What lenses do you use anyway?
What makes the tripod legs you got better for video than say some Gitzo still photography legs, for video shooting?
So to price out the entire setup...

A photography tripod is to small and light for video. Video needs to be very still since shake will be seen and felt. Also, the easy leveling head is a must for video!
I went with the 18inch rods kit.
It came with 3 different gears. I mostly use the 2 biggest ones. (size B and C)
I use a 17-40L, 24-70L, 70-200L, 15m fisheye, 300 2.8L IS, 85 1.8 and 14 2.8L II.
You have the prices correct! I do not find it bad since I get paid to do photography and video is my hobby for now.

Cool. Thanks for the info. And so even though a nice set of Gitzo legs like the Series 3, 3541LS lets, they would not be good for video? I mean they are meant to use for stills to keep very steady, why wouldn't video work as well?
And I dont think you told me, but did that Manfrotto strap come with the tripod? Or is it part of the case for the tripod?

The biggest one since the legs are big and the strap is tight at the bottom...

majority of simple tripod will work w/ video camcorder as long as the capacity doesn't exceed. the reason why ppl call it "video tripod" is bc the camcorder itself should be dynamic and support the load when it's moving. the static load itself can be handled but it's critical when it's in dynamic mode.
i.e. a very dynamic shot would be swish-pan, pan very hard and fast. w/o it, the shock will vibrate the post and may not give you a smooth image even though you got a top-of-the-line fluid head.
the "video tripod" structure is much stiffer than a simple tripod. it's actually a complex structure that yield a very high stiffness and strength, at the same weight as regular(photo) tripod. Look at this (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/487976-REG/Manfrotto_by_Bogen_Imaging_501HDV_351MVB2K_501HDV_ 351MVB2K_1_Stage_Tripod_System.html) tripod you linked. the top-half of the legs are double pole but the bottom-half is single w/ the links. those are there NOT to spread the legs, but it's there to primarily stiffen the structure.
does the 5dII need it? NO, absolutely not. you don't want to pan much on the 5DII due to CMOS rolling shutter.

So are you saying that sebmour's setup I've been asking questions about is way over kill for a 5D MK II? I've seen his stuff and its pretty impressive for a "hobby"...nothing fancy but still nice fluid motions and focus.
It seems that all the people on www.cinema5d.com like these kinds of setups too, I was just curious what advantages it gave me over my Gitzo legs.
I am not doing anything but hobby video with this stuff, for now, so I wonder if this is a setup I look at when I want to do something more serious?
I found this YouTube video...with the same tripod but the 503HDV Fluid Video Head.

It's not overkill when you are shooting with a 300 f2.8L IS and a 5DII. Just the weight is enough for the head to find it rough. I admit if you are shooting with a wide angle like the 17-40 ou 16-35 then yes it's overkill but I'll be shooting a commercial with a 500 f4L IS. You never know what will be used sometimes...I like to be prepare then not able!

I agree, I think right now though for me, my biggest lens is the 24-70 2.8 L, with maybe a 70-200 if I borrow it from a family member. I think right now I might keep these kits in my wish list and try out a video head on the Gitzo to see if its good enough for what I want to do now...but seeing your setup gives me something to work towards needing for sure. You've opened up my eyes to what my next step might be.
Here is a video of tripods and DSLR cameras for video...kind of makes me think I might be good at first with my GT3541LS and a Fluid Video Head?

To answer the OP, Yes. I use the 501HDV with my Mark II. How does it work? Pretty well, I say. No complaints here. It's smooth and fluid. I have to recommend it.

Hey, I'm thinking about getting the 701HDV for my T1i. The thing is that I want to use this setup for both video, and photos. Is the 701HDV good enough to use for stills? is it steady once locked?
The setup I'm thinking of getting is 190XB + 701HDV.

we use both 501 and 701 on 7D, t1i, and 5DII. we started out w/ 501 and 501hdv.

i need to pick up a video fluid head for a shoot tomorrow. I'll get proper video legs later on once I start building my full rig.
I'm having a hard time deciding between the 501HDV and the 701HDV. It's my understanding that the 701 is actually smoother because it is a true fluid head, with the next true fluid head being the 503 at $200 more.
Will the 501 being an oil head be a problem?
At present the most it would be supporting is the 5DmkII + 70-200 f/2.8 + rode videomic.
In the relatively near future i will also have a monitor, a proper rig, and other things attached.
I'm inclined to go with the 501 based on what is coming soon, but I'm curious if anyone thinks it's a bad idea.

Well, I was waiting for a reply to your post but none came in time for me, so I just bought the 501HDV head to use with my 5D2 and 70-200 and 24-105 and 17-40 and Rode Video mic & beachtek. I read that the 701 simply wasn't able to deal with the weight of the 70-200 or bigger lenses using the lens ring mount, with the same level of smoothness and steadiness as the 501.
Seeing as i'll probably be getting more kit - like a monitor and some wireless mics, rails and follow focus in future when funds allow, it seemed the right option for me right now. I'll post my feeling about it up here in a few days time. It's also more or less the same price as the 701 here in the UK - £110 Vs £120 for the 501.

I was ready to just buy the 501HDV and use it on my photo legs, but there was a really solid deal at Samy's Camera that I couldn't pass up. I got the 701HDV + 547B legs (w/ 60mm bowl) for $220. To buy both of these at B&H it's $365. I used it tonight and I was very very happy with it. I know it's not perfect, but honestly for my current needs it will meet them.
I used it with the 5D + BG-E6 + 16-35 + Rode Videomic and 5D + 70-200 + Rode Videomic and it worked excellent.
Admittedly I have little knowledge of videography but I'm learning quickly. This solution is far better than using my photo tripods w/ ball-heads. Plus, for the price I certainly can't complain. I may swap it out in the future, but I'm plenty happy for now.

I got the 501HDV today and I love it.
At the moment it's only on a Manfrotto 055PRO tripod but it's solid and steady and feels really nice with the 5D2 + Grip + 70-200 2.8 L IS and Rode Videomic. If you are using the 5D battery grip then you sould be aware that you can only just squeeze the camera on and get it balanced since the bottom of the camera touches the mount for the handle.
This is only an point of note when using the lens ring mount and the 70-200. Smaller lenses won't do this since the camera will be mounted directly to the head and with bigger lenses the camera will be positioned further back to counter balance the weight of the lens.
Build quality is excellent and for a beginner I am finding it really easy to get very smooth, jerk free pans straight away. You will also need a MN323 quick release plate ($30 or £25)to attach to the slide plate supplied, if you want to swap between fluid head and a Manfrotto stills head quickly.
Now I need to find a cheap but quality follow focus and figure out how to attach it all to the 501 without spending too much on rails etc... Does anyone recommend any rails and follow focus that don't cost the earth (ie. nothing from Zacuto!!) that works well on the 501 HDV?
Cheers.

Thanks Chris, I had a look at their products about 4-5 months ago and then forgot about them. They have definitely moved their product development on a long way since and i'll probably get the 12" carbon rails and the Follow Focus and see how that all works for me.
Cheers.
