I know there are probably much better cameras on the market, but I got this for free through a free site (you know the pyramid type "schemes" that no one believes work but actually do)...anyhow..

i have an older nikon which will serve me well the next time i go to iraq/afghanistan, but this camera is truly beautiful.

when you complete your requirements on the free site i got the camera from (must complete one offer and have ten others do the same) you can choose between two sonys, a kodak, and this camera. i heard that canon has EXCELLANT lenses, and i was also attracted especially to the fact that you can control the shutter speed, as well as the 7.1mp (i want to decorate a lot of my house with my photography, especially when i go to vegas this summer again).

this is awesome that i can finally take pictures of my car and landscapes in the dark or fading light (www.turboprotege.org (hasnt been updated because ive been so busy, but hey...its a start) - car has been on MazdaUSA's corporate website as well, as well as in some magazines).

i am also quite glad to find there is a forum that is decent (not that cheap line after line crap) forum setup for canon cameras. i am the top poster (almost 19k posts) at www.protege5.com, so i feel at home with a nice vBB.

soon im going to buy a 256MB Cf card (what speed should i get?), a tripod, and a case.

how good is the software to link images together? im very excited about doing that for a portion of the las vegas strip to put on the wall of my apartment...

The S70 is a great camera! and with great quality.

I recommend you to get at least a 512MB card. If you pretend to shot at Large and super fine or RAW.

The photostitch is good enought, may be not the best, but very good.

If you wanna look a lot of pictures almost all taken with an S70, go visit my site. (http://ppuga.smugmug.com)

Cheers! And welcome.

With 512MB at hi res, I usually get 150-160 shooting in L Super Fine, but shooting in RAW the number gets down to 60-70 more less.

But it entarely depends on your kind of usage!

enjoy your new camera.

I just bought an S70 as a pocket camera for times when I just don't feel like carrying one of the SLRs around. My main criteria were that it have a wide range of settings, have decent resolution, use CF cards, and be able to shoot RAW.

so what speed must the CF card have?

Honestly, I don't even think about it with the S70. I can't take shots fast enough with it to worry about the speed of the card. That is not the case with my SLR which shoots 8.5 frames per second. I've been buying 40X and most recently, 80X cards, 1-gig minimum.

I have an S70. I bought a gig(40x) card and I have a 512(regular) that I use in my(the wife's now) S50. Burst mode is limited by the built in RAM. Also, 640 movies are limited to 30sec. I perceived a difference between the two cards when testing, but it might have been since I wanted the 40x to be faster.

I really like my S70. Oh, one more thing, I use gaffers tape to hold the lens cover open when I will be taking lots of pics cause it closes very easily during use. At least for me it does. The S50 stays open better.

Practice.
Get to know your camera. Understand all the functions it has, and how they work, and what they do.
Understand the light.
etc.
