You've probably heard by now. It's been all over the news today -- Steve Wynn's new $2,700,000,000 hotel/casino opened on the Las Vegas Strip today. Here's a picture I took of it a little while ago:

http://www.ldphotography.net/Travel/PBase/20030519-22/May%2019-22,%202003%20-%20Las%20Vegas,%20Nevada/May%2019-21,%202003%20-%20The%20Strip/slides/Las%20Vegas%20009.jpg

Ok, so it was a long time ago... :D I'll be in Vegas next week, so I'll try to get a more up to date picture of it then.

This is about as "now" as I can get until next week. From last November:

Yep, he definitely has more money than anyone deserves. Well, he had more money, anyway. :)

 Yep. That's two-point-seven-billion-dollars. Steve Wynn is no stranger to spending a ton of money on Las Vegas property. He also built Treasure Island, The Mirage and Bellagio.

You know he's a Connecticut Native. Several years back he came and offered to build a huge (mega) casino convention center in Hartford if the city and the state would allow gambling. Like IDIOTS they turned him down, course since then the 2 Indian tribes have built monster resort casinos on there resevation land in Connecticut. And the City of Hartford still struggles along. talk about dumb political moves.

That would be nice, but I doubt it would happen. This is Vegas, after all. There are probably hundreds of thousands of similar pictures. I'll bet Wynn even had his own photographer documenting the construction.

Man alive billionaires huh, always have to put their name on their building. I hear there will be a trump there soon too. Is the Mirrage a last name too? I know Hilton is.

No, that one is named for the desert theme the hotel has.

i stayed at the Mirage last year and saw this construction out my window . . . you could also see the construction in some air-shots on C.S.I. that's amazing to see the finished product. I'm going back again next year, so I can't wait to see it in person.

Steve Wynn is no stranger to spending a ton of money on Las Vegas property. He also built Treasure Island, The Mirage and Bellagio. Thanks, I've been seeing the commercials "This is the only hotel that I would put my name on." and I always assumed it was the one that I saw under construction, but then after the commercial ran, I was always saying, "who's Steve Wynn?"

Yep, that would have been it. It's across the street from Treasure Island, so you would have had a good view of it from the Mirage also.

Last time I was in Vegas there were also new towers going up at Bellagio and the Venetian, as well as a lot of construction at Caesar's Palace.

Ok, here's how it looks now:

From the Strip (I wasn't planning to upgrade, but I think I might have to get CS2 after all for that new barrel distortion filter):
http://www.ldphotography.net/cdpf/wynn-new01.jpg
Canon EOS 20D, Canon EF 17-40 f/4L @ 17mm, 1/100s, f/7.1, ISO 100

The man-made "mountain" in front. Pretty disappointing, if you ask me. I was hoping for something bigger. I heard somewhere that he brought in 1,500 pine trees for it. I believe it. This whole section of the Strip positively reeks of pine. But, they are all jammed way too close together to be healthy for the trees.
http://www.ldphotography.net/cdpf/wynn-new02.jpg
Canon EOS 20D, Canon EF 17-40 f/4L @ 17mm, 1/100s, f/7.1, ISO 100

The waterfall on the "mountain":
http://www.ldphotography.net/cdpf/wynn-new03.jpg
Canon EOS 20D, Canon EF 17-40 f/4L @ 17mm, 1/100s, f/7.1, ISO 100

The casino entrance. There must have been a million flowers here, and just like the pine tree smell on the street, the smell of the flowers here was almost overpowering:
http://www.ldphotography.net/cdpf/wynn-new04.jpg
Canon EOS 20D, Canon EF 17-40 f/4L @ 17mm, 1/60s, f/4.5, ISO 100, Canon Speedlite 580EX with Lumiquest SoftBox

Oops. I guess there are still a few kinks to work out:
http://www.ldphotography.net/cdpf/wynn-new05.jpg
Canon EOS 20D, Canon EF 17-40 f/4L @ 40mm, 1/50s, f/4, ISO 1600

The casino was a bit smaller than I expected. Overall, I was pretty under-impressed.

nice shots Lonnie & Ben

it all looks a bit overpowering

too many sweet smelling flowers can be kindof overpowering also
and the trees will die if cramped like you say Lonnie
their branches need to spread some (with air in between) or they will go brown and die slowly, as you know
sounds like they were just planted to show instant good viewing , and will be replaced (just like that)
:( if all comes to all

We were there about the same time, huh? So, were you as unimpressed by it as I was?

I guess when you're really rich you don't have to worry about spending money to replace the trees every so often.

Pretty much - it all just felt like it was trying too hard - I guess they are trying to compete with the high end places like the Bellagio, but the Wynn just made the Bellagio feel quite reserved! Maybe it will feel better once it's a bit more established and not quite as busy.
