View Full Version : Chipped the pain on my new 28-300 L IS USM!

The first job I did with this lens was a wedding last weekend (see post http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=70045)

However, I've just been putting my gear away and I noticed a chip of paint on the lens!!! If you look at the top of the lens, where the 'ring' tripod mount runs round, the chip is on the top of the lip. Not a great deal but noticable. I can not remember knocking it or mis-treating it, quite the opposite in fact as I was really careful with it (as anyone would be first time out!!!) I thought these lenses were meant to be rugged???

Has anyone else had problems like this?

It doesn't matter at all. As the lens is used, wear and tear will do the same.
Feel happy for you having the ultra zoom L lens. (I am feel jealous ^^).

Thanks :) Just a bit peeved that after one (gentle) use the paint is chipped. I had a Canon 28-135 IS USM for 2 years which went to Cuba, Denmark, Thailand and Malaysia... and that didn't get chipped!!!!!

The 28-300 is a great lens, though in the UK it is *EXPENSIVE*. Calumet want around £2,000 inc. VAT (or $3,825 USD). Another example of rip-off Britain. However I bought the lens from overseas, saving me around a third of the cost.

Some people hate (like me) sending things back to the manufacturer. If you don't mind doing that, you should send it back. I have the 70-200f2.8 IS and Is't been around the block a few times and has never chipped. Sounds like the finish was bad from the start. For what that cost, get it replaced.

Lenses are sold with international warranties, usually, so Canon UK should do any warranty repairs free of charge, if you decide to go that way. I'd call first.

I think I'll put up with it, its my only lens and I need it next week for racing at Cadwell Park.
