I see more and more posts where the user write the entire subject line in all capital letters.

It's annoying, its not pleasant to the eye and it is rude.

Why do some users think they get more attention when they do that? I tend to ignore people that shout at me so.....

Pekka, is there an option in the forum software that somehow can prevent subjects in all capital letters?

I don't think that's really necessary. Besides, I might want to put a word with all capitals right in the middle of a sentence, and such software would likely not have the intelligence to allow me to do it. The best thing is education. Simply tell people that the use of all caps is the equivalent of shouting, and is frowned upon in most online communities.

....if everyone does that then people will stop using all capitals. I wouldn't let this one worry you. :)

I don't think they are shouting, usually on any boards you'll find the posters who post with all CAPITAL LETTERS ARE VERY NEW TO BOARDS AND (oops sorry for the caps;) ) and are probably new to this thing called typing.

10,12 years ago when I first got to use a computer that is how I typed. Because it was too much work using the CAPs in the right fashion. As time went on, I eventually learned to type (just like all of us).

So I think most times when you get someone using all caps its simply because they need "Typing for Dummies" and not because they are yelling. Usually if you let them know that all caps on the net is considered yelling and lower case is much better, they'll usually stop.

Thing that I find hard to read a post is when a poster doesnt use the "enter" key and their entire post is one giant sentance. I hate that more then anything.

I have to disagree ;) Well it might apply to 5% or so of the users that post with all capital letters.

Here is an example just minutes old

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=71322

This is not a new user and my bet is that the capital letters is 100% intentional in an effort to get more attention that specific post. Why do I think this and 95% of the other posts are intentional, because the body text is typed normally. The users that don't know or use capital letters accidentially usually do it through the entire post.

That's the idea of bold? That's why on sites simple things like Bold/Italics/Underline can add a slight impact to draw the attention. You can see ALL HIS POSTS ARE BOLD TITLES. ;)

Doesn't seem to be too much wrong with Bold titles, but perhaps BOLD text during a whole post gets annoying.

I know on some forums you can block particular users out of your view. Doubt you need to go to that extent. If that was possible, I'm guessing I would be invisible to most people around here.

PS. Nothing against the guy, but did you notice his occupation is "Sales". Now that is acceptable. Unless he's an auctioneer. :D

I had to tell my friend who typed all his emails to STOP USING ALL CAPITAL LETTERS!
He did it all the time, and never realized he was "breaking" internet etiquette.
When I told him that all caps are the internet equivalent to shouting, he laughed and called me a geek. Then he said the reason he did it was because he found it was much easier to read in all caps, and he thought he was doing others a favour. *lol*

VB has within the ablity to turn posts made in all caps into lowecase, but its very annoying, as it turns all words into lower case, and sometimes its nice to BE ABLE to emphazise.

Entire posts made in all Caps are of course a problem, but they are not a problem here.

Thread titles in all caps are not really that big a deal.
It is a little rude, and generaly done to attract attention, but if your put off buy it then simply don't read those threads.
In the end the thread starter loses.

If I had a dollar for every post made in Usenet groups and forums about the use of capital letters - why, I'd be stinking rich :) This complaint goes right back to the start of newsgroups when they were the realm of scientific types. Boy did it get heated sometimes. No matter what the topic of discussion, when someone used all caps the war was on! But having survived working for at least a decade with messaging systems that didn't even have lower case, I find it difficult to get worked up about it.

All caps ARE annoying ;) , but if this is a pet peeve thread, what I can't stand are messages without punctuation, or sentences beginning with capital letters - - such as...

took a shot of my cool car today hope you like it its one hot ride i don't have time or the care to type with anything other than small letters

Awful, awful, awful.

For years I used to type with the caps lock on, simply because I prefered it. I find it odd that people online find it annoying or offensive though. who cares.

This thread makes me laugh. I agree it is annoying to read thread when they are all in caps, but then if I think it is rude, I can simply ignore the post and move on. As for bad grammar or punctuation or the endless other mistakes people make (including me I shall add), this is also not too big a problem. As an English teacher in China I come across what we call Chinglish (Chinese English) all the time, and some of the posts here look like Chinglish also!! :D:rolleyes:

As long as it it photography based, I tend not to worry. I can start marking posts if you like!!
