Did you install the software first?
Try uninstalling any trace of the camera - check Device Manager.
To be honest, you're much better off with a card reader. Its a LOT quicker! :)

In the menu on the 10D, you can set the communication mode to "Normal" or "PTP".
If you want to use the Canon software to transfer images from the camera, set it to "Normal".
If you want to see the camera as a drive in Windows Explorer (on Windows 2000 or XP), set it to "PTP".
But I agree with weemannie, it's better to get a USB 2.0 CF card reader - it works much faster than transferring images directly from the camera, which has only a slow USB 1.1 interface. For more info on card readers, do a search on the forums, we've discussed them many times before.

Step by step:
1. Switch on your 10D
2. Press the "MENU" button
3. Use the wheel on the back to scroll down to "Communication"
4. Press the "SET" button (in the middle of the wheel on the back)
5. Choose "Normal" or "PTP" using the wheel on the back
6. Press "SET" to make your choice
7. Press "MENU" to exit the menu

What version of firmware is installed? I vaguely recall that the PTP was added in a later firmware release.

I connected my 1 series camera before loading the software and have been unable to get my computer to recognize it too. I have a card reader for compact flash, but had to buy one for the sd card. Oh, well. You'd think with the sophistication of these things nowadays, it would not matter which came first, the chicken or the egg.
