I sold one of my "L" lenses and used the money to buy a 40D approximately 3 weeks ago. I also bought a Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 lens to go with the new camera but I'm really starting to miss the "fast glass" and find myself salivating over the 24-70L. I shoot in low light quite a bit so I need something fast. I would keep the 40D but I don't think I can afford new glass and keep the new camera.
What should I do guys? I can't make up my mind.???

So currently you have the Canon 40D and the Tamron 28-75 2.8?
The 24-70 isnt any faster that the Tamron they are both 2.8.
Keep the 40D and go shoot. If you need more shutter speed pump the ISO on the 40D youll be suprised how well it does.

I disagree. I have the Tamron for my 5D and I really don't like to use it in low light for focusing because it doesn't do well. It focuses slow and not that accurately. My experience is using it in conference meeting rooms and in fairly sit restuarants. In those same conditions, my 100 f2 focuses great.
I'd have to imagine a Canon with USM and f2.8 would focus much better than the Tamron. The Tamron does great in decent natural light and better matching the IQ of The 24-70L, but it's rather weak indoors without flash assistance.

It seems like you do a lot of jumping around. What's your goal?

Honestly I don't jump around much. I just decided to upgrade because my 70-200mm was too long for what I needed but I'm afraid I may have compromised some quality and speed. My goal is to get the best quality I can with out clearing out my account.
silvrr, the Tamron is a bit slower in low light and has trouble focusing quickly. I've missed a few shots due to the sluggish focusing. However once it locks on the pictures are tack sharp but the slow focusing is driving me crazy.

Did you buy the 40D new or used? If new, can you still return it? Selling it used you might get $700, and buying a 30D for approx $400 will only put $300 in your pocket.

No. Don't go backwards. How about using what you have to get photography jobs and financing a fast lens? Look forward, my friend.

I upgraded over a year ago from my 20D to a 40D and I can't even think about looking back. I found even trying to use my 20D as a second body with a wide angle lens at races I would still switch lenses and shoot with my 40D.
Between the sensor cleaning, extra FPS, better saturation, and bigger LCD there is no way I could go back. I think I would even have trouble moving to a 1D MKIIn because I would loose some of the new features that I would only find in the 1DMKIII.

what sort "L" lenses you have to sell to get 40D??
Mint condition 40D goes for about $600 - $650 only. Same condition 30D goes for $450 - 500. So buy swithing, you only save $150, far from your target: 24-70L. BTW, this lens is NOT faster then your Tamron.

I really appreciate you guys' feedback. I thought I was going a little overboard.:) I'm just going to stick with what I have and be a little more patient in saving for some glass.

Low light on a budget... why not get a nifty fifty for now?

Keep in mind that no matter how "fast" a lens is, it can't focus if it doesn't "see" contrast. You can speed up the focusing of your Tamron quite a bit if you simply look for things of contrast....the glisten of eyeglasses, the shine of a pin, etc. Those things reflect the wee bit of light that does exist and that reflection is a huge contrast against the relative darkness of the subject's clothing or skin. An alternative is to mount a speedlite and disable the flash in the custom functions. Use the AF-assist beam to...well...assist with AF.
I have a 24-70L and a 1D II and it too can hunt if I don't give it stuff to lock onto.
