View Full Version : Canon EF 17-35mm F/2.8L

8th of June 2009 (Mon), 11:27
I couldn't find a sample archive for this lens (I realize its a bit of an older lens, having two newer versions already out - 16-35 mkI & mkII), so I figured I would try to start one.
Anybody have pics from this lens?
I'll start with a shot from the Jays game last week, taken with this lens on my mkIII.

Very nice. I just ordered this lens used and hope to enjoy it soon.

I borrowed my friend's Canon EF F/2.8L 17-35mm, and put it on my 5D. Here's what I got:

Sweet pic! :) I havent had a lot of fun with mine yet. Been way too busy at work. I got a used one from Adorama. Its 10 years old and rough around the edges and softer than I thought it would be, but I think I just have to get used to it. Looks sweet on your 5D. Im using 1D MKII right now.

yeah seems like a decent lens!

Mike ES...

Thanks for starting a this up... here's my contribution:

At 17mm on a 1Ds MkI, Av=f/10, 1/320s, ISO=100, Exp. Comp=-2/3

I bought this lens from the used dept at Adorama in early 2006, and it's performed well for me. I thought it was wide on my 1D MkI, until last week... when I picked up a used 1Ds MkI.

Another nice shot Geneman88, nice colors :)

Here's one from this last evening...

taken with 1Ds MkI at 17mm, Av=f/8, Tv=1/125s, ISO=200

Photo was taken in RAW format and PP via Aperture... I boosted the colors a little. Thanks for looking!

Great shots guys!
I've had it almost half a year now...taken it to Peru, Mali, Senegal and Burkina Faso (through sea salt, desert sand, 90% humidity, and up to 4000ft altitude) and it worked great...even after I dropped it four feet onto a cement floor!

9th of November 2009 (Mon), 13:16
Mine is in the repair shop thru Adorama... wont see it for another 2 or 3 weeks.... manual focus stopped working.

Reviving an old thread...because I love this lens!

10th of July 2010 (Sat), 04:35
Very sharp lens from 20mm - 35mm at f/2.8.

I'd say this summarises the quality... (17 @ f/2.8 is about equal to the 18-55 wide open)
35 f/2.8 9/10
35 f/4 9/10
24 f/2.8 8/10
24 f/4 9/10
20 f/2.8 8/10
20 f/4 9/10
17 f/2.8 6/10
17 f/4 8/10
17 f/5.6 9/10

I'll end my thread spamming now!

Cool lens though (I know I missed a bit of the cloning -I'm a sports photographer, so not used to this cloning stuffs!)

One of these finally showed up in my mailbox today so hopefully I can help contribute to this thread a bit. Possibly even make a page 2!

17th of August 2010 (Tue), 18:07
I love this lens! :)
I not only use it for stills photography, but it also is a great lens for producing pro-quality video with the 5D Mark II. I also use this lens a lot for underwater shots and filming.

any one have this lens with crop sensor camera ? i have it on 7D

i got some lost of focus in f2.8 ,and adjust it with Micro adjustment -5,

it's fixed a little but still not as sharp as 50mm f1.8 (on F2.8)

7th of September 2010 (Tue), 16:34
I bought this lens about a month ago. Although it's a little bit old, but still performs excellently. I love it.

I just got one a couple of days ago....

Some have complained that the lens is a lemon. Cant say I have seen any problems unless its lack of contrast giving the illusion of lack of sharpness. I shot slightly into the sun and the shots were suprisingly bad but otherwise the lens has seemed tack sharp on my 1Ds mk1

This is a great walk around lens when I owned it.
I recently sold it cause I picked up the 35mm L

Here's my contributions to this thread from a recent shoot.

The last three are my favorite taken by this lens! :D
Not too much extensive PP on them yet, as I just shot them on Friday, but I did some color grading, along with vibrance, and exposure changes.

Let me know what you guys think! :D

Also you can find more of the set on my Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/btgstudios/)

If it's in good condition, that's a great deal.

I just bought two from KEH for around $700 apiece. The first was sent back for some minor fungus that slipped past their tests, but the second is in near-perfect condition and is a beauty.

With this lens, check for:
- Fungus (it is an older lens)
- Focus ring issues (I've seen several forums talk about this lens and this)
- Excessive blurring at 17mm (depends on the copy)

If it's a good copy of the lens, you shouldn't get excessive blurring/distortion at 17mm (obv. barrel distortion is a given) and the focus ring should be smooth! I'm shooting my first wedding with this lens this weekend, I'll post pics when I can!

Haven't been to Las Vegas in years. On a recent visit, I discovered the Neon Museum (http://www.neonmuseum.org). An interesting place to visit with lots of stuff to photograph. The museum allows photos to be taken, BUT visitors are limited to one camera/lens combo per person. No gear bags, no tripods, no monopods. Knowing this, I decided to shoot with the 17-35L.
