While I recognize that zooms seem to be supplanting fixed lenses according to buying habits, why would Canon discontinue what was obviously such a fine lens as the 200 F1.8? Is there any reason other than pure economics, that it just wasn't selling?

Apperently it wasn't selling well,..
It was allways an "exotic" with limited applications.
There timing of course was bad.. they discontinue just as the influx of newbie digital users were beginning to start buying high end lenses en masse,. as opposed to the niche that these lenses had been.. (o-kay still a niche as compared to 75-300mm $250.00 zoom lenses,.. but a much larger niche now!)
There are other things about the manufacturing process of the lenses that often get quoted,. lead content etc.. but this did not stop Canon from re-designing the rest of the white super-telephoto lenses with more modern, safer to build replacements.. replacements that with added bells and whistles,. (like IS) ...make the replacements improvements over the older generation.

Ro, who knows how much you'll be able to afford in the future? Do well in school, get a good job, stay the heck off this forum for a while, and save. You'll be able to afford anything you want.
Either that, or charge it. Heck, you only live once.

With introduction of 300D, and Nikon D70, more and more compact camera users are switching to the DSLR. The current market situation of lense is so different from few years ago. I believe Canon would introduce this legendary lens with IS function in the short future to come up with that of Nikon. We would see.
