When I saw the title of the thread and then looked at the first picture I thought it was a joke, i thought the car was from a junk yard by the way it looked. But then the next picture is of the same car doing a wheelie.:)

I love the torque on the tires in a few of the pictures, amazing how fast those cars go. Nice shots.

Can't judge a book by its cover. One of the fastest cars at a track I used to shoot at was the one with the worst body. All the money was in the suspension and motor.

To the OP.

Nice pics. I would imagine the 50 1.8 would struggle to focus at night. Shots during the day look pretty good though.

Sin shooting from behind.
In particular i would like the front of the 5.

But I think you could not doing otherwise.

I like the pics. Street car shoot outs are getting insane with the ETs. Eight second cars are pretty common anymore. This is just unreal. Gotta love it!

not good for night race pics These look very nice to me. I might have tried some blurs with the night atmosphere:
The official Dream Cruise - Saturday (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=554646) One of the fastest cars at a track I used to shoot at was the one with the worst body. All the money was in the suspension and motor. That's a guy after my own heart! "No show; all go!" ;)

Great shots, I love 1-3. Was this out at speedworld or firebird?

I have used a nifty fifty at drag races at night in poor light and I didn't think it had any more difficulty focusing than most other lenses I used in the same situation. What seems to be tough for any lens is to figure out what to do when the image moves away rather than toward you. On camera flash is a challenge at the track. I prefer using two or more strobes off camera, but it isn't always possible.

As far as angle, I bet you were playing the cards you were dealt, so to speak, and couldn't get in front of them. When shooting from behind, I've actually put the camera right down on the strip. Hard to aim without live view, but from time-to-time you get some interesting shots. You also get a lot of crud on the camera and lens and there is a high potential for small projectiles hitting your lens. I don't think it would work with flash on camera since the foreground would be really, really close to the flash. This example isn't the greatest, but it gives you an idea of what that ultra-low angle can do.

I agree, but I've gotten some interesting shots from behind. My favorite is one where the license plate is springing open due to the acceleration off the line. :D
