Not enough information.
What is your budget?
What kind of photography do you hope to do?
What experience do you already have with cameras?
BTW... Welcome

The Canon 5DII would be my choice! Don't forget to budget a couple thousand dollars for lenses too...
Good luck!

I would go with the Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera available now on amazon fo $699.
Also, If you can swing it, unless you stepfather has the 100mm macro lens, try to get the Canon 60mm f/2.8 macro for $370.
The 60mm is a good all around (fixed focal length) lens and a truly awesome macro lens -- especially for the price.

see my sig. I'm making her do her own research on this.

BTW.. If you don't need the Kit lens with your camera, you can save about $50 on the XSi by buying just the body for $649.00

LOL.. I was thinking "Why don't you ask you're stepfather, if he has a 5d he must know something!"
Very cool!

Is the kit lens worth getting if she has access to the lens below (sig). I am making her right now only use the 50mm on my 5d but I don't know anything about the kit lens on the XSI

The kit lens is an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6.
It is a good all around lens -- for $50, it is a great buy. It does not offer too much more than what you already have, but it is a better all-purpose walk around lens (IMHO) than any single lens that you have. (It should be noted that your primes will better results at their respective lengths than you will get with the kit lens)

If I gave her all the answers then she wouldn't learn and may as well just get a cheap point and shoot camera. If I make her learn then she will understand then I can start asking her questions. I am also making her only work in Manual mode so that she starts to learn this stuff. Today we have been working on the sunny 16 rule and making adjustments to see the affects. thanks for your help. Now I will jump off and let her get in here

It just occurred to me.. I wasn't thinking about you (stepdad) being able to use her lenses too. If she were to get the 60mm macro, you would not be able to use it with the 5D because it is an EF-S (only works with the canon crop senor cameras). If she, and you, want to do macro, it might make more sense to get the more expensive 100mm macro lens or use a (much cheaper) extension tube for the 50mm.

hey hairy_moth!
thanks for all the advice! yeah that sounds like a good deal and sure i can get the 100mm or the 60mm... and the XSi was the one i was looking at getting in the first place so it sounds like i was in the right track. Thanks for everything! If i have anymore questions, can i ask you or something???
again thanks!

My vote would be the XSi as well. I still have my old Digital Rebel XT, and it's my only camera. I've gotten some damn good results, too. Anything in your budget will yield great results with the right technique.

Welcome,
Since your step dad has a Canon body and lenses, getting a Canon slr makes sense as you can share lenses. Since cost is an option and you are starting out, I'd recommend looking at the Canon Rebel XS. It comes with a kit lens for about $550 at Amazon and you can borrow his telephoto lens for sports if he has one.
If you need to get a "zoom" lens for sports, a Canon 55-250mmIS sells for about $260. Looks like Adorama is selling refurbished one for under $230 as well.
Good luck and have fun.

Hello Vanessa.
I think the canon 40d is a optimum choice because is a good body,
you will really enjoy which entry-level models is more difficult for many limitations.
