View Full Version : The age old question; what portfolio size?

I've been asked by models what portfolio size they should have. They all want bigger than 8x10 and they all say some other photographer told them a larger size that they can't remember.

I use 11x17 books and larger for myself. For the 11x17 I like to print 10x15 or 11x16.5 keeping the 2:3 ratio unless the photo dictates something else. I can print any size so it really doesn't matter to me.

What size are models using a lot lately. What size should I advise.

I have a 9x12 book laying around to give a model that I'm working with. Is that too small these days?

I use an 11x17 right now, but I'm thinking about getting a second portfolio. My work is 70% sports/ 30% everything else, & I was advised to just do a sports book & everything else in another. I've got a good mix of vertical & horizontal photos, but I just don't like the look of horizontal photos in a vertical book, but I think its just personal choice.

I like to keep the 2:3 ratio so I am undecided between 8 x 12" or 12 x 18". My local lab prints both these sizes and the price is $4.50 and $8.50, however I cannot seem to find professional portfolio albums for those sizes. So far I only seem to find 8.5x11, 11x17, 13x19 albums :(

Good price on the 12x18 not so good on the 8x12. I print myself and print for others using Mpix pricing http://www.mpix.com/PrintPricing.aspx

8x12 in a 9x12
12x18 in a 13x19

Look here for all the sizes...

Yeah I saw those Itoya before. I really like the professional series one, but I also like the Pina Zangaro Rosanno. Seems I have a lot of choices at 11x17" so I will probably go this way for size of my printed photos for my portfolio. I will print at 18x12 and cut the extra inch. Btw the prices above are for C-Prints in Kodak Endura Metallic paper (which is just awesome and well worth the extra $2.50). Costco has a decent quality print at super cheap price, but I would not use it for my personal port.

That's funny. I'm using an 11x17 book and print 11x16.5, but I print whatever size I want.
