I probably wont be doing a bunch of photo editing like you pros do but i will be doing a fair share of editing especially if my hobby turns into a side business type thing through college. I was wondering if the baseline 24" Imac would be suitable for my needs? I probably wont be doing video editing or anything like that. Any advice will be appreciated.

It ought to be fine for the 40D. Where you'll run into trouble is with the 50D and the full-frame cameras (other than the 5D mk I). The display is a true 8-bit panel (H-IPS), but glossy. You'll want to install an app called "Shades" to tune down its brightness.

Not sure whether it has to come from Apple direct or not. Email or call toll free line and ask...:)

Load it with 4gig or RAM, add in an external hard drive for backs ups, and it will do.

If you are looking for a bargain - look in the online Apple store for a refurb model. The selection is constantly changing, but right now 24" iMac 2.8 GHz (previous model) is $1199. The current iMac 24" 2.66 GHz is $1299.
