View Full Version : How bad is the recession where you live?

Here in Atlantic Canada it seemed that we were in a bubble. Real estate still selling, no big layoffs, we seemed somewhat unaffected. But, it was too good to be true! When the lobster fishing season opened recently, prices paid to the fishermen were a fraction of what is usual. They say it isn't even worth leaving the wharf anymore.

Some have obviously decided to really cut costs, downsizing their equipment to the bare essentials in order to squeeze out a profit.

Take a look at this 2009 lobster fishing boat that I shot at Pointe du Chene Wharf near my home just the other day:

In Italy the recession is really bad but mister "Paperone de Paperoni" has all the television media in his hand so is not much advertised.
Many shops are closed, and several spaces are rented for months.

I think it would be more interesting if you crop out everything but the platform floating in the ocean. I like the idea though!

In general, you'll find two sorts of folks on this subject.

Person A has lost their job, and had to deal with all the other crap that comes with it. They will probably say the recession is horrible.

Person B still has their job, and probably hasn't felt a financial impact from it. They will say the recession moderately bad.

One thing is for sure, we've all seen effects around us, and I bet just about every one of us personally knows someone who has lost their job from it. I luckily survived a massive round of layoffs. On the plus side, a handful of those folks have been brought back, as business is slooowly starting to pick up. I have two family members who are struggling, and one of them might end up moving in. I'm not happy about it, as my home is really small, but we have to pull together in times like these.

I don't know what to make of big corporations closing down. On one hand I hate it because I don't like seeing so many folks sent packing. On the other hand I love it because I find it amusing that even GM didn't have enough foresight to save for a rainy day. The mom and pop shops are dropping like flies. Sometimes I'm reminded of "Judge Dredd" where the only restaurant to survive was "Taco Bell" lol.

How's this Sloonz? I shot it at the same time as the first but zoomed in. I figured that the marina in the background of the first shot gave it some context, but this works also:

More ocean to convey the abandoned feel.

Cheers.
