This was my first attempt at indoors sports and got it badly wrong.
However I thought the pic was funny. Looks like my son has kicked his sensei in the goolies.
Any suggestings for setings to try would be appreciated.

I'd be interested to hear what you think you got badly wrong in that shot? It works for me.
Only suggestion would be try and get the feet in and tell your son it's not wise to kick someone bigger and more skilled than him in the goolies... he might not take it as a joke ;)

I thought the focus was pretty bad and was thinking the blur took away from the foto.

The focus looks bang on in terms of being on your son's head- he was the main subject after all. As for the blur, well that shows motion which is quite important in an action shot. It's easy to crank the shutter speed way up and avoid all motion blur -that's why we see so many shots of race cars which appear "parked" on the circuit. The trick is having just enough to show that your subjects are moving ;) I'd say that shot isn't far off.

We have an old adage here... "If you are fighting with someone that is bigger and more experienced, kick him immediately in the gollies and end the fight. On the other hand, if you are fighting with somebody that is smaller and less experienced, do the same, otherwise he will kick you in the goolies"
