i like the first one. it is more of a unorthodoxed angle to skate photos...try takings some stait up the rail on a line..crooked grind with a macro lens is what im thinkin

2nd one is doing it more for me. First one is pretty hot on his shoe and front trucks, and the city lights seem out of place. Not particuarlly digging the comp either, the negative space at the bottom isn't doing anything for me, a crop at the corner of the ledge makes it looks better IMO.

The second one, the lights actually appear like city lights so they don't bother me. Like the composition better and the lighting is better. If I can nit pick anything I wouldn't mind maybe a half stop more light on his face. Doesn't really say 180 over rail to me, but it's still a cool photo.

Figured I'd give it a Wheels and Wax-esque critique since that place has completely fallen apart.

Thank you for that!

What's a good shutter speed and aperture for skate shots?

I always shoot with off-camera flashes, so at night it's between 1/10 to 1/800, f/7.1, ISO400, depending on how much ambient I want. Aperture controls flash intensity, shutter controls ambient. To kill the ambient on these, I shot them at a higher shutter speed. #1 was at 1/125, #2 was at 1/320. In daylight, I usually shoot between 1/500 and 1/800, f/9-f/10, ISO200. Flashes freeze the motion, since at 1/2 power my Sunpak 544's have a flash duration of 1/1000. Those are just usually what I dial into before I shoot, and I tweak as I'm shooting.

Yeah have you lurked over there recently? Everyone good peaced out, and now everyone who posts still can't follow the rules and kids with 10 posts, none which are photos are the main critiquers.

Yeah, I stop by every once in awhile. It's sad, I used to love the knowledge there compared to that of SkatePerception. Now both are filled with ignorant newbs. Agro-Union was good for awhile, and then everyone stopped using that, too.
