When taking multiple shots for a focus stack do you move the camera forward/back or do you focus on the nearest part of the object, rotate/move up and down the camera, and use the focus adjustment on the lens until you've shot all the parts in focus?

You can do either but I normally use fixed focus and move the camera. Stacking software should resize the images as needed before aligning and stacking

From what I've read you need to focus from front to back or side to side depending on your subject in a somewhat controlled sequence to follow when using the stacking program. Have'nt figured out if it is acceptable to pan left or right/up &down then back and forth to get things in focus or stay in a straight plane & just move back & forth only if you can understand that. I tried manual stack & auto using combinezm without acceptable results. When manually setting the points using 1&2/3&4 do I set parameters on every 4 or do I clk ok on the following stacks when using 4 ?

When doing manual alignment you choose a master pic normally in the middle of the sequence and mark points I&2 on it, on all the other shots you use 3&4 on each one.

When using 4 do I set parameters for each additional shot in the sequence or only once?

you set it for each shot. You are making the programme align each separate shot against the master.

Ok so every time I use 4 within the stack I set the parameters for each shot in the stack. At times I can be slow. By the way thanks for the replies.
