I am using cannon s30 with 128 mb itegral cf card. After about 150 holiday pics the message " cf card error" appeared on lcd screen. Are all my lovely pics lost or is there a way yo retrieve them?

Hi there,

I had exactly the same problem. The photos can be recovered in most instances but you may need to purchase a compact flash reader.

The following thread should help:-

I buyed three 128mb CF cards of this brand (Integral, 128mb) because they where cheap. What a nightmare ...!@#$%. Damaged pictures, CF-card errors, etc. I retuned them to the store. Now I have good experiences with TranScend, Viking and SanDisk. They are more expensive but it is worth it.

Same problem here, "CF Error" and "data corrupt" then images dissappearing from the CF card. I tried another integral 256mb card and got exactly the same results and lost images

Going to try sandisk.

That is exactly may experience with Canon PowerShot A200
and PQI 96MB. After buying of SanDisk 64MB, I never see
ANY errors with camera and card reader!

SanDisk are inventors of Compact Flash standard
and many photo companies use SanDisk OEM cards
for bundling with their cameras. This sounds good for me.

Lexar is another good brand.

You can get a 256 MB card for $43.00

RUN "CHKDSK /F" on the command prompt of the CF card using a card reader, that will fix the problem, remember to convert the lost clusters into files, rename them to .jpg and that will do the trick!!!

Even cards from different batches with the same manufacturer can vary.

I had four 256mb cards from Crucial that produced corrupt files by the score in an Ixus V3. I got one to work by formatting the card in my laptop - but was still unhappy that I needed a work-around.

However, Crucial knew of the problem when I phoned them and they are in the process of swopping my cards.

So far I have tested two of them and they are fine now.

The other two arrived from Crucial yesterday and I'll test them this weekend.

1 month after my previous post, I shoot hundrets of images, and still don't see ANY problem with SanDisk 64 MB and Canon (SanDisk) 8 Mb CF cards.

Return your integral memory and get another one of a different manufacturer. I've also had problems with Memorex memories.

14 months later, shooted around 14000 images, and still don't see ANY problem (non-readable or distorted images, non-readable media, etc.)
with 2x SanDisk 64 MB and 1x Canon (SanDisk) 8 Mb CF cards.

Cheap memory cards aren't. You'll lose photos, lose time trying to recover the photos, and lose hair you pulled out in frustration. If you're having trouble with the Canon card that came with your camera, and with another card as well, the problem's likely with the camera. If you're only using the super-enormous el cheapo card you got on special, try swapping back for another card and see if the problems persist. SanDisk and Lexar are reliable brands. I've had errors on one of my Kingston 1 GB cards, but never with SanDisk or my IBM microdrives. Sometimes, if the camera seemed to be taking the pictures, but none appeared on the card, using an un-delete utility will allow you to recover some of the images. It's a little less chancy than using CHKDSK /F.
