I spent all my summer holidays here as a kid and remember playing on this mountain.

Offa's Dyke runs the length of the Welsh border and is dotted with hill forts along it's length.

This one is thought to be about 2,500 years old and was abandoned 2,000 years ago. When the Romans came to North Wales from Chester (Deva) looking for gold they used a route through here and the Roman road can still be traced across the top of nearby hills. I've walked it myself many time.

This first picture shows the outer 'wall' called I ring ditch I believe. The dip is about 5 foot deep and you can imagine after 2,500 years of erosion how deep it was when built.

This second picture shows the two 'rings.' Basically the fort was a giant version of the type kids make in the sand by pilling up a big mound and making a ditch around it.

Digging has suggested that there are two guard chambers in the fort and pools of frsh water are still evident today, where it is thought there were once wells.

Sorry the pics aren't great, but I hope you get the idea of the history of the place.

WOW! those are wonderful Damian, and a wonderful history lesson to go with it. I find it amazing the things that they constructed so long ago, and with out power tools. Labor truly was cheap... Of course the incentives were even great "follow orders, build it, or die" sure gets the point across.

I would love to know how long it took. The amount of soil and rocks that they moved must have been huge.

Thanks for looking in Sandy.

Thanks. I know it isn't the best pic I have ever taken, but I thought people might be interested.
