View Full Version : BrainStorming For the Next New York Meet

MDJAK

My peabrain is always working overtime. I figure, this last meet at Birds of Prey was a mini success, in that we had SIX (6) members show, and we actually met a stealth member there. Can't remember his name.

So, for the next meet, why not you people contribute ideas and dates to this thread (man,o,man, I can see this going absolutely nowhere already). I see this as a fabulous idea that's really going to take off. It knows no bounds.

There you have it. Let the fountainhead/wellhead of ideas spring forth:

You have the floor.

Why don't you take one for the team and get on that ATV, do some silly tricks on it and fall right on over?

We'll have a little contest to decide who got the best picture of you in unbearable pain.

That ought to be a very popular meet.

:D:lol:;)

Does anyone wanna do any shooting this Sunday (or Saturday if preferable)? The weather forecast for this weekend is looking fantastic so far.

I don't really know what we can shoot. Maybe the NYBG or BBG? Hell, we could even just run around doing some street shooting, and, of course, hit up Wo Hop afterwards. I love shooting on Mulberry towards Canal, always some great street ops - plenty of color, plenty of people, life.

By the way, that Coney Island Mermaid Parade that Pio mentioned some time ago is on Saturday, June 20th. I'll be up at Cornell for the weekend, but maybe it's something worth checking out? Still debating whether or not it'll even be worth it to take my 1/8000" 40D with me upstate. ;)

That's where it's convenient, however I am not opposed to a meet outside of NYC, which is what we had this past weekend at Brewster, NY.

This weekend is out of the question for me.

I've never heard of these photo walks. Are they even worth it? Seems like it'd turn out to be just a bunch of big douche bags with excessively enormous lenses walking through the city taking up the entire street. Now that I read that again, sounds like my kind of day! :D ;)

Would anyone rather just meet for a small street shoot? I already mentioned Chinatown/Little Italy; there's plenty to shoot there. Or do we need something totally epic?

EiTheL

@Calzinger, well the one I posted up just now only has me and my friend in it so far, so no douche bags in the group so far (or so I think XD).

If we all sign up for the same photo walk, there won't be much other people since this one was set up late.

Oh, I was worried that these photo walks turn into big groups of tourist-like fools that get too much attention. I'd much rather do something more casual, talk about photo gear and the like and just take a few snaps. Maybe I'll look into one of these walks.

We're all a bunch of douche bags. Anyone who spends thousands on a few pieces of curvy glass is an uber douche bag. :D :D

Yeah, Chris, don't dare bring us down to the level of thousands. I'm probably well north of FIFTY LARGE, VERY LARGE in camera equipment, and loving it.

As to Chinatown, sounds great, especially since Nicky won't be able to make it. He'd probably insist on ordering in his native Philipino tongue anyway as the waiters were jabbing chopsticks in his eyeballs.

I've never been interested in the Scott Kelby photowalks either. I get a vibe that they're hyper-organized and deep down ultimately an advertising venture. Count me out.

Otherwise, photowalking is my style. The trips to Ellis Island, the Botanical Garden and such are my speed - I don't have the patience nor interest for strobist/model-mayhem stuff.

The amount of shots you can take using fully charged AAs in the catridge is embarassing at best, but if it's only temporary, I don't see the need to buy a new charger. Just be prepared to bring a bunch of spares, you'll be needing 'em especially if you're trigger happy.

Oh yeah...real men use Canon TC's...in case you didn't get that the first, second, or the third time.

Just ask MDJAK...wait...he uses a Nikon. Forget it then...
Now that just makes way too much sense. What kind of punk kid wouldn't buy something branded Quantaray? Sounds like they'd sell solar panels or something.

You men and your egos and your Canons and your cannons and your obsessions with each others Canons and cannons... :D ;)

Thought I'd share a few pics from my trip upstate last week, only ended up taking like nine shots the whole time.

Shot with a sigma 24-70 2.8 non-HSM (the old one), easily the worst lens ever made ever. This thing could benefit from a permanently mounted front cap so I wouldn't end up wasting time taking the lens with me everywhere thinking it'd actually leave me with usable shots. I've never used a lens whose idea of attained AF is a shot of a landscape at MFD. Sigma FAIL.

9 shots?

Obviously you are not from the spray and pray...then spray and pray...then scream out some choice words for the lack of a single decent shot...then spray and pray...school like me and MDJAK. Efficiency is overrated. I mean if we were meant to carefully think about the shot and shoot, well, we wouldn't have 16GB CF cards now would we? Ain't that right MDJAK? You tell 'em!

A non focusing non HSM Sigma...sounds like a bunch of excuses to me. Get back to me when you are actually able to wield the 50L buddy!

Given my 6'6" frame, i must be on the right side of the bell curve no?

One thing though...yes, i do have a full head of straight black hair.

Quantaray? Isn't that a Japanese whiskey infused with an anti malaria concoction? When will this fabled Next New York Meet going to be, I wonder? ;)

Well, well, well...look who walked into the party.

I've had that Japanese whiskey infused with an anti malaria concoction and it was quite good. I highly recommend it.

And just an FYI, we've had several of the infamous "fabled" NY meets. They would have been better without pops MDJAK looking over our shoulders, but it is what it is ya know?

Yeah, there was a fireworks show, but we didn't bother with it. Instead, we had dinner, tried to go to a movie but they were closing early.

Next day we saw Hangover. If you want to laugh your ass off, go see it.

I'm back home now and ready to go shooting.

Personally I just bought the Crumpler 6MDH and i love it. It fits all my gear without a problem and soon enough ill be purchasing a 70-200 F/4 L and it also fits. Definitiley impressed with the quaility of the bag and its easy access to the camera. Here are pictures from a fellow member:
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=383571&page=17 Again it will depend on what gear you have and what are you looking to place in it.

For example i can fit my 450D gripped with the tamron 28-75 lense hood reversed attached, my kit 18-55is and the nifty fifty with no problem. As a mattar of fact i have a lot of left over space!!! But thats because i know in the future ill be going to a bigger sized camera.

Also for Manhattanheng i was thinking of going with a star filter anyone know if thats a good idea?

The steamer came and went (out...that is...) without major incident, thank you very much. The HVAC duct turned out to be an output register, not a return one, so I got to enjoy the aroma all by myself and maintained my status as a good guest.

So how was your cheesy little trip to Washington State? So how wuz the White House, the monument, Lincoln Memorial...uhhhh...wait a minute...duhhhhh....uhhhhh.
