Do you need the warranty card to register your new camera when you purchase it from someone that lost the card but never registered the camera and still in the 1st year?

I've never been asked to provide the warranty card. However, the couple of claims I had to make with Canon I did have to provide a copy of the receipt from the store it was bought from. Not only does this help them verify that the camera is under warranty, it also helps them verify if the warranty is a US warranty or international warranty.

I thought that all canon products were international warranties. It really didn't matter where it came from?

Nope it does matter some. There are essentially two types of warranties for those of us in the US. 1) The USA/International Canada warranty and 2) The general International Warranty. Items sold with 2 are usually called gray market items. To get an in-warranty repair done on #2 items, you have to go through the store you bought it from. Items sold as #1, Canon will directly service them for in-warranty repairs.

But now that I think of it, it may not matter as long as you've got a receipt from the store it was bought from. Camera bodies aren't usually sold on the gray market like lenses are. Especially if it is a 5D you need repaired. The 5D isn't like how the Rebel is sold as the Kiss in some markets and the XXXD in other markets.

Warranties are usually extended to the original purchaser only. That is why I would never buy used.
