Some of you might hate me for this, sorry if you do :)

Mate came in with a Canon 70-200 F2.8 IS L series lens and a canon 1D mkII.
He said the lens seems to work but a bit stiff and it wobbles and the 1D rattles. all this happened after he dropped them both. Silly billy.

he handed them to me in one hand a screw driver in the other, saying "enjoy".
So i did. :)

here is the pics.

mate has not charged the camera since he dropped it so the battery was flat. here is our attempt to try and charge it.

All covers, rubbers, mounts from the top down to the IS controls.

Took the middle cover off and was left this 3 bits of it left attached to the maint unit.

Not good. mate said it be ok and ran off and got some super glue. :|
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v70/Axios/Mics/2009_06_10_2550Medium.jpg

This is the IS unit. this was not working that well, it would jump around all over the place and the drop also cause some oil/grease to be splattered over the middle lens.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v70/Axios/Mics/2009_06_10_2554Medium.jpg

Cleaned up what i could and put it all back together. did notice a small dent on the zoom ring that was causeing it to stick. put it back together and it worked but the IS was still doddgy (That needs replacing) and the focus was a bit hit and miss but the images was what you would expect from L series lens. thats when it focues and the IS unit was not jumping all over the place.

On to the camera.

where the camera has been dropped there is a crack in the top cover and the battery is missing is missing a chunk of plastic. it did apear to work, powers on, takes pics. but it did get the ocasonal Error 99 and Error 01 codes and there is that rattle.

The back, with no cover and 1 big motor

The back of the back cover, where the screen and card door is

Bits of cover and screws

The front with no cover. The front cover is boring in comparison to the back. so i never took a pic of it

The top cover with the crack, dont think you can see it

You can see where the drop was bad. there is a bit missing from the prisom (SP) and there is a screw thread missing. its been snapped off.

Not sure if you can see it in this one, but there is water damage and signs of shorting out on a couple of the connections.

I think this camera has had it.

Would a return to Canon not have been easier?

Your friend has too much money if he can afford for a 70-200 and a 1D mkII to be effectively written off by attempted repairs

yup but its not as much fun or interesting.
He did not want to take it to canon or claim on the insurance.

Would have done the same thing, always when something breaks or die's, I open it up to have a look inside, and then throw it in the garbage bin :p.

Thanks for the photo's :).

Thanks for posting this. I am just glad I did not have to do it to get a look inside.

Not a problem. happy they are apperciated.
best thing is, this was during work and the boss did not mind :)

I'm keeing the lens, apart from the IS and zoom not working it works really well.
I'm going to keep a eye out for another one and try and make 1 good one out of the two.
Happy days :)

I can understand wy you would go for an F1.8, only to much is blurred in my opinion. I would have gone for an F5.6 so everything is more sharp. Remember the parts are the subject in these photo's so they all can be a little sharper.

thanks for sharing, very interesting.
And agree the DOF is too shallow, couldn't see all the detail in some shots.

Kaben:=- Not sure what he's doing the body. its still sat on his desk. If there was not as much wrong with it, electronic wise. I'd be tempted to repair or use parts to repair another one.
GOing to try and keep the lens and fix that.

The dof is poor and i should have taken it up a bit to get better detail but the light was very poor and i was having trouble trying to get enouth light in.
next time i'll set the studio lights up and take some better pics for you all :)

I am looking for places in the UK that will sell canon parts for lense. i'm tempted to buy broken ones off ebay and try and fix them.

I guess you could try calling a few of the repair shops around to see what they do with their throw-aways. I expect that they have to send them back to Canon, but it's worth a couple of phone calls...

Thanks for posting the pics. The camera and the lens look very delicate. I will have to be more gentle with my gear.

I have to say that even the thought of opeing them up scares the "£$% out of me.

Nice to see the insides though.
