i am not a big fan of too dramatic effects on kids...I think dramatic lighting and serious kid's face make him look like a bullie or something...but its just me... i want kids to be small and innacent :)

theveed

He's quite "dramatic" when he's wearing his costumes, that's just how he is and a "cheery" lighting won't work well IMO, and besides, he was the one who told me to make it darker like "Batman" he says... LOL.

david, excuse the noob question, but how do you get your backgrounds perfect white and black? is it done in post processing or do you turn up the power of the background light? i keep seeing the wrinkles in my pics.

theveed
19th of September 2009 (Sat), 07:05
Biff: Hi, I use my living room's wall, not a cloth or paper, so wrinkles are non-existent.

But in order to get really dark background, you just have to make sure that the background is about 3 stops darker than your midtone (subject), conversely, you have to overexpose the background by 2 or 3 stops brighter than midtone.

hey great pics by the way. i have a question about your last post. I totally understand your explaination about the 3 stops under/over but after that part is figured out, now its the flash settings. lets assume its off camera. do you just try a setting, for ex. 1/8 then see if you need more or less and go from there? do you use anything on the flash? disfuser of some sort? zoom?

vinunleaded
19th of September 2009 (Sat), 12:36
beautiful work. Did you crop those pictures in photoshop or theres a camera that can do that?

theveed
19th of September 2009 (Sat), 22:29
Vin: Thanks for looking.. Cropped in Photoshop as my camera doesn't have 16:9/18:9 modes. I just shoot with cropping in mind so I leave more space at the top and bottom for cropping :)

Fabian: Hmm, in many cases, I use a shoot-through umbrella if indoors. For post #62 (the one with the ear-gadget light) was shot with a grid attachment, while shots like post #60 (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=8558744&postcount=60) was shot with an on-cam flash via ETTL bounced around walls and stuff.

Personally, I take a shot without the flash on to see if the ambient has been "killed" to get a dark background, then turn on the flash and move the subject as far from background as possible to make sure the BG doesn't get lit. For bright BG, I often just light for the background (overexposing the BG) then I add a diffusing scrim in front of the subject to reduce subject illumination, I find that easier than setting up a background light and a main light.

then I add a diffusing scrim in front of the subject to reduce subject illumination, I find that easier than setting up a background light and a main light.

hey what do you mean by diffusing scrim?

I tried today to take some pics of my daughter with off camera flash (just one 430ex) and I was trying to achieve the blacked out BG. I set my flash off and took a pic and everything was dark (black black). then i turned on my flash on my stand and took a pic of my daughter standing away from the BG about 10 ft. and my flash still illuminated the BG. I bounced the flash off an umbrella towards my daughter. camera left. I turned down the power and then my daughter wasnt getting the exposure i was looking for. if i turned it up then the background was lite up. maybe i need her to be further away from the background? I also tried turning it from manual to ettl and i wasnt successful. maybe im not understanding my flash settings? for ex. ettl...

Made this for you, hope it clarifies some things.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a69/theveed/sample.jpg <<

First image (upper left) is the scrim/diffuser setup. The light that passed through the scrim is diffused and has less intensity than the light hitting the background.

Second image (bottom left) is how you use a flag to block light from hitting the background.

Third and fourth image basically describes the inverse square law. The closer the subject is to the light, the faster the light fall off afterwards, so assuming both image 3 and 4 receives the same exposure on the SUBJECT, image 3 will have a darker background than image 4.

However, Zach Arias (http://www.zarias.com/?p=101) << (click) will explain it much better :)
