I'm looking at acquiring a 100-400L. Any chance that a II version is in the works? I can't find any rumors on this.

Given Canon's current track record, if a new one were released, I'd count on it at least being $2k+.

Boy, it feels I've waited forever to get this lens thinking that the MkII was coming any day... Tell you what, I will go ahead and order it. Damn sure Canon will release the upgrade a few days later. Someone has to make this sacrifice ... ;)

That's how I felt when I ordered mine back in April. That feeling quickly disappeared though after receiving the lens and thinking about how much a possible Mk II version could cost.

Not to mention the lost oppertunities to use this wonderful lens while you wait for an update that might be announced

I have a need in early July visiting some national parks. I'm going to wait for another week before I order one.

I just purchased my second one this week (one for me and one for my son), so I am darn sure the announcement will come this week. Seriously, since price will be high, best bet (or at least the bet I made) is to buy a good used copy with plans to sell after the trip/event as it will not lose any value on re-sell. (My 2nd copy will be available on this forum in August.)

Sorry for the ignorance, but would be be the primary upgrades with a MkII? Updated IS system, different element materials/coatings? I'm looking to get one before a trip in Sept.

IS could definitely use an update. Could be faster, but that would make the lens larger.

General polishing of the mechanicals and IS, better sealing, ergo stuff, etc.

Too late, anyway, I ordered mine yesterday.

Smart move.
Just think if this was 1978 and you were "waiting" for that magical car that gets 100 MPG.
I bet you'd be pretty pissed come 2009, still driving that Chevy Nova that still gets better gas mileage than many pickup trucks :)

From what I've heard and what my friend who recently got one suggested... the 100-400 has recently gone through stealthy upgrade (at least they've fixed the QQ issues it had). Now it's pretty easy to get a sharp copy (compared to before where it was pretty hit and miss).

I'd say now isn't a terrible time to buy a 100-400.

If that doesn't push you to buy one, I'd pull the plug on the idea.

(see the subtle word play there?! ;) ).

Can we pump you for a few more cute quotes?

If you want to dust off some old photos and pump some life into your techique. Try the 100-400, it will push you to new limits and pull you out of your rutt.
