Yea, that's what I've been hearing too (early '10 Q1) to make way for the i5. If it's true then it's likely because they don't want anything competing with the new chips coming out this Q4. Intel's been getting into a lot of trouble lately with their shady behind the scene pricing and releases.

another thing that breaks my heart is that...
when i bought my computer, not two days ago, i pieced together the following:
UD4P Mobo for i7 920
Corsair XMS3
and the same store TWO DAYS LATER, had the following for the same price on promo..
UD4P Mobo for i7 920
Corsair Dominator
DAMN DAMN DAMN!

i cant exchange it because of restocking issues.
its okay though.. i am not that sad. lol...
eventhough the i7 920 will be discontinued, i am still happy that i have it. :D

As long as it drops into my current x58 board I could care less, my i7 920 is a power house I don't see needing anything more.

It's technology. You can't expect it to be the same for any given time. Buy what you can afford now and don't worry about it. Hopefully they keep the same socket, however.

First it was the Pentium, or "five-um"
Then the PII or "Five-um two"
Then the PIII "Five-um three"
then, even though it bore no relation to the previous Five-um lines, they had the nerve to call the next one P4 (note they had to drop the roman numeral as PIV would be the same as writing V IV or "Five-um one less than five", they opted or "Five-um four" instead.
Best part is that despite adding III or 4 to the Five-um name, intel is trailing behind AMDs Athlon and Opterons art this point,. with the P4 not just very far behind, but in fact in the wrong direction!
Finally we drop the "five" moniker and go lower, to 2... for Core2
This in direct response to steal as much of Athlons thunder with there slightly more mature "Dual Core" Moniker... Intel of course was more wishy washy though on what Core 2 meant, as it did not refer to having two cores... ?
So what did the 2 stand for? No one really knows.. but they added a second number 2 for the actual dual core chips, ie: "Duo" so now we have a 2x2 like the more anemic little import pick trucks we saw in the mid 1980s when we had to have a number x number to be cool,. even if we didn't actually have a 4x4.. we'd get 2x2 and even (I kid you not) 2x4!!!!
But I digress....
So finally we get the i7... finally we get a processor that actually sounds like a "step up" and amazingly it actually IS! Taking advantage of much of the gorund that AMD was covering while intel ran off to burbank with the P4, they add on processor memory controllers and otehr great AMD architecture,. and make the best CPUs ever!
... and yet before 99.9% of the world even gets a chance to drop one of these fire breathers under the hood,. they discontinue it, and look ready to replace it with a processor that will sound like a downgrade?
Now all the while they are releasing these dating back at least to the original Pentium, they have these secret/not even remotely secret code names.. which are all bad ass names from geographical wonders like western rivers..
These are the names I like to have under the hood,.
Tillamook, Merced, Katmai, Willamette, Cascade, Coppermine, Klamath, Nehalem, and Xeon.
I mean, I'm running a "core 2 duo" doesn't sound nearly as cool as my old Fujitsu laptop which ran a Tillamook!
Strange company.

I think they're going to be producing the new chips less than a mile down the road from me. Intel has been setting up the new "Fab" and leaking info to the local news media for about a year. They layed off over 1,000 workers while they re-tooled. Hope they hire that many back.

I always tell people to try to buy technology the week after they need it. I love it when I hear a big box store sales associates tell people some computer is a great price, like it will actually ever be sold for a higher price than it is that second.
I knew a fellow that owned a fairly large paving firm and he did not want to computerize his office because the price of computers kept going down. (This was a fair few years back and he was talking mini computer so more than a fair few years I guess). I told his he was nuts because eventually you do need to upgrade (or get with the program in his case).
Reminds one of camera bodies, we are convinced that what we just bought will last us a long time but in 3 years it is starting to look a bit long in the tooth (quicker for some unfortunate folks).
Still my i7 machine is keeping me happy and I have little patience for computers that seem slow.

i am not really complaining about my i7. I love it! its more than enough for me. and i'm sure that it will last me for another 4 years down the road to upgrading to their next i-Whatever line. LOL i24!

I don't care if they drop the chips, heck maybe it will be worth something one day since they will be so scarce? As lng as the socket doesn't change (for a while) I will be happy. The i7 was the first "high end" PC I have bought in a long time, maybe ever. I always skimped before. I love this machine more than any other I have owned. I just wished I used it more!

exactly. the i7 is the most advanced PC i have ever bought...
back in 2004, i built my first ever AMD 64-bit computer. it the newest thing... but it turned out to be garbage because of a faulty mobo that soon appeared after the warranty wore off... it basically restarted every 2 hours. i said they heck with it, and i threw it out and bought a mac.

My first programming teacher tol me years ago never try to be on the cutting edge of technology, or this is what would happen. We were discussing purchasing riser cards so wwe could get 2 MB of ram in the computer. :)

LOL. 2mb of ram.
i remember i had this 800mhz hp mini atx computer that i bought in 2001. It is still alive today. But today, it serves a different purpose... it runs as a server for file storage.
