I need help PLEASE. I love photography and have the eye, but I don't understand the technical side yet. I'll be shooting the shuttle launch on Saturday morning, and want to have my camera set correctly for the best possible shot. Here are the specs.

Launch time: 7:14 a.m.
Sunrise: 6:25
Equipment: EOS Rebel XSi, 300 mm telephoto, lens hood, tripod
Will be shooting into the sun, although the sun will already be above the horizon.
Will be shooting across the Indian River, with a direct view of the launch pad
I'm pretty sure the flames from the rockets will be brighter than the sun

I'm not sure what mode to set the camera on (maybe program mode), what aperture, ISO, etc. I was also wondering about metering (was thinking evaluative metering) and focusing for continuous shooting (one-shot, AI focus, or AI Servo)

Any help will REALLY REALLY REALLY be appreciated!

I have to move this to "Talk", as it's not a "Share" thread.

Nice Twilight launch, taken from the Vehicle Assembly Building.
