Hey all, got the lens, wow, sharp and fast! love it, what I am having trouble with is the silly lens hood, this is the mk II that has the longer bayonet hood, well it's fairly hard to get that sucker to twist on much more than a degree, and then I worry it will come loose, but when I go to remove it, it's very hard to twist off.
Do any of you guys/gals have trouble with the hood for this lens?
I did find out what was wrong and wanted to share it with you guys and gals.
There is a small ramp on the entrance on each side of the hood, and where the blade of the lens slides into the groove of the hood, the small ramp/bump causes it to be a very tight fit, I thought I would break mine from the force needed to get it even started onto the lens!
I took a small sharp knife and whittled away that ramp, it's on each side of the hood, opposite sides, you need to get it down so the hood will slip onto the lens. If I had owned a Dremel grinder it would have made a much cleaners groove but I don't have one.
Here is an image of the cut/butcher ;) job I did, it doesn't look near as bad as this closeup shows  but now the lens hood twists on securely and without much trouble at all.

I've heard tell that the 135L also suffers from this problem, after getting this lens, I would love to be able to add the 135L to my collection, this 200L f2.8 is exceptional!

hehe, love of a lens isn't always pretty lol
But when viewed normally, it doesn't look bad at all, that is
a VERY closeup shot taken with my 20D, the 85 f1.8 with a
Raynox 250 closeup filter on and my 580EX flash sitting off
to the left on it's little table stand and off camera cord.
First time using that like that btw, kinda neat to be able to
do that...
BUT if I hadn't carved out that ramp? I would fear for damaging
my lens/camera mount by the force needed to twist that hood on.
It really was a desperate act. :D

The close-up looks terrible (but I think this would not affect the general looking).

Here is a shot just taken showing the hood mounted onto the lens, as you can see, from the outside you really don't notice any kind of terrible damage as that closeup shows ;)

SO, if I had a small dremel grinding wheel that would have fit down the groove, I could have
ground away that small ramp on each side of the hood, if I can borrow a one, I'll dress up the
carving a little but even so, you have to look quite close to see it.

I'm not intimately familiar with the hood for this lens,. is it similar to the 85mm 1.8 in that there are buttons you squeeze to take it off and get it back on?
I only ask because the only lens hood I've ever had a lot of trouble with is the one for the 85mm.
I have the 135mm f/2L and it's hood does not pose any trouble at all...

Nope, nothing like the 85 f1.8 which I also have, love it too!
I've been told this is similar to your 135L hood, it could be there was a manufacturing flaw in the mold of the hood, to leave that small ramp area in the groove, not sure but man it was TOUGH trying to force it on, never did get it to GO on just sort of on a very little bit and then couldn't take it off hardly!

ps,
now it twists on nicely! :) happier camper here, just wanted to alert others that have the same troubles, all is not lost.

Let's be honest here. Canon lens/hood attachment design is not the best... in fact I suspect it's done by the same bloke who designs the doors on their flash guns...

I, too, have the 135/F2 and the lens hood fits fine.

Hahahaha... it's true! The link up between hood and lens was allways more solid on the Sigma EX designs I've used..
I suppose there is an argument for the hood being able to snap off if the lens is dropped to help absorb impact ;)

Mine has a slight play it in compared to other Canon lenses i have which are very tight fitting.
Thanks!
