With all the rain that we've had, the Trinity River Spillway is pretty full of water. You can get great shots of the Dallas skyline reflecting onto the water. Unfortunately, the Reunion Tower ball isn't lit up at this time. The best place to shoot from is either the Sylvan overpass or from the adjacent levee.

I use a 70-200 2.8 IS lens with my 5D MarkII but I have to crop pretty heavy to fill the frame. A friend uses a I think Tamron 100-400 lens and gets good shots without much cropping on her 40D. The best thing about FW zoo is you dont have to shoot thru fences and they have very nice enclosures.
Here are some of my shots from the FW zoo with the 5D MarkII

These were taken with my 40D with the 70-200 and a canon 2X teleconverter

There's also the Dallas Arboretum to consider...you can google it for more details. Also the Fort Worth Botanic Gardens, Fort Worth Nature Center, and of course the famous Stockyards. Not sure about the zoo at this time of year...most critters are not active due to the heat and pretty much just lie around trying to stay cool.

You probally wont have enough lense to get pics with the big game animals to fill the frame. My friend that shoots with the long lense on her 40D usually shoots over 200mm just due to the distance you are from the animals. Also the above poster makes a good point, most of the animals will just be laying around during the hot part of the summer. You might catch them more active if you go first thing in th morning.

I really wanted to go to the zoo but was affraid that my lens won't be able to capture all the animals also the heat factor...
I will probably check out the fountain in front of Richardson Library and canyon creek park / prairie creek park this weekend
