I have read threads on here done the searches, etc.. I know it's silly but I'll make it a poll to keep it easy.
I am looking at getting my first prime, probably going on my 5D2 as it has problems focusing in poor light.
1st though 35L
2nd 50L
3rd 24L
I will likely end up with 2 primes later on but which would be the most usefull as an only prime??

On a FF, the 50L is it for me.

I like the question, but don't think you included some of the best choices. I'm also shopping my first prime to go on a 5d2 body, but am thinking either the 85L 1.2 or 135L.

The 85 1.2 is the most useful for such events. I don't have one, due to loving my 1.8, but I know someday, maybe this year, it's one lens I'll have to consider. The 50 1.2 is a good lens, but too slow.

I'm pretty sure the only lens that is slower than the 50L is the 85L... But the 50L is definitely slow!

HaHa, I will probably get an 85 down the road but thought it would be somewhat limited for a first prime. I am looking to take my 24-70 zoom off main body. keep the 70-200 on the second body, when i get a 3rd body: it'll likely get the zoom and 2nd will likely get an 85.
I am new to the whole wedding/event thing. I have been shooting landscape/wildlife for years.

since you're slapping the zooms on the 2nd and 3rd body .. i would go with the 35L .. even with one lens, you can shoot the entire wedding on a 35L and my second choice is 50L

I dunno. In my view, and for my style, it's hard to beat Canon's zooms. I have a 24-70 on a 50D, the 70-200 2.8 IS on the 5D2, and Sigma's 10-20 on an old XT. I always have a camera ready for something, and 2.8 may not be as fast as some primes, it's certainly workable and the IQ is excellent. Having zooms is so handy, I think the only reason I'd want to ever make a swap during the day is for that extra degree of IQ that a prime offers. And that's the kind of portraits I'd look to take with an 85.

I'd favour the 35L. 50L is great but the focus isn't as quick as you'd want for a fast-paced event.
You have to be vary careful at apertures that wide though - I'd question how often you'll be able to actually use an aperture wider than f/2.8 whilst keeping everything important within the depth-of field.

85L is REALLY slow to focus, at least the V1 is, and the V2 is only a bit faster apparently. Sigma lenses are usually reasonable performers in the focus speed department, not the fastest but not the slowest either.

oh really ? for that such L pricy price :)
yup i got sigma 17-70, last project i take shoot on the pub bar.. and it can serve well on the dark ambience ... just because that 430ex beam hehee
what i interest in sigma 50mm F1.4 is cause the blur quality is good as like L ? hmm thats an issue .. just IMO

The DOF of the 85L is so narrow it needs a really accurate focusing system. Accurate means slow, usually.
Sigma 50 F1.4 has a good reputation in general, from what i've read.

Sigma 50mm F1.4 is stunning. Even better than my old 30mm F1.4 and that was amazing
