So I want to start my photography website, not to be a pro, but to have somewhere to put pictures without it compressing them. I will be watermarking them so people cannot steal them. And I have flickr but it is not a pro account (and for $24.95 a year I can have my own website for that much. I would like to be a professional photographer one day, and I have a product somewhere in my Adobe suite to build websites, so why not do that now?
My husband thinks AprilArchambeauPhotography is stupid, thats my name so I was going to use that. Anyone have any creative ideas? http://www.pitbull-chat.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Do you like those better than with archambeau in it? I forget the website someone told me to use, but the price was very reasonable. I think it was oneandone.com or something like that?
Its like 3.99 a month, not sure if you are locked in for a year or not though. I just need a fast server that is reliable.
What do you use and how much is it per month. I assume I can use this dreamweaver program I have although I have never used it, but there are always dummies books :)

I'm just a hobbyist, I use zenfolio to host my images and godaddy.com to point my domain name to it....

I don't know anything about any of that. I guessed if I use a hosting site. They have website builders, you can have unlimited email addresses, and keep your domain name forever, I am confused, but will get it eventually ;-)

Archambeau.co.uk is available
so is aprilarchambeu.com
like aprilarchambeu , dont think you need to add photography in the name, could just be added on the web page
I use compila at - http://www.compila.com/pages/hosting/linuxindex.html
there about the cheapest i have found in the UK and have used them for years. there £19.99PA plan also allows two mysql databases.

I might do AprilArchambeau.com. I think it fits. Can I use flash or anything with any host? I am just looking for unlimited bandwidth and a few email addresses.
Do you guys think this would give me what I need?

for your url - you want it as short and memorable as possible. long URLS are hard to remember for your clients or potiential clients. for instance - if you dont have a card or anything to write with on you, you want to be able to tell someone interested in your services your website and make sure they find it.

Compare your pricing to GoDaddy.com, they are huge and as such have pretty great pricing. Quite a bit less than your example above.

Yep, so about half the cost of justhost.com. Theirs will also go down from there if you pay for more than one month in advance.

Ah ok. I do not have any clue what to look for in a web host. I just need to upload photos, make the website look nice, have a few email addresses and I will be set. Does godaddy give you unlimited everything as well?
Nvm just looked, their economy plan only gives you 10gb space, and next plan which is 6.00 a month gives you 150. not sure how much I would need?

You can just add up the size of your photos to get an idea of what size space you need. For example "only" 10gb of space, at about 50kb per picture (my estimate of a "reasonable sized photo") will allow for about 200,000 photos. So if you have more photos than that... then yes you might need the more expensive plan :)

By the way, the tough part here is not picking out the web host, most any of them will probably do fine for what you want. It will be making the web site. I realize you're saying you will learn, but you might do some poking around with Dreamweaver just to get a feel for what you might be up against. Some folks find it very frustrating, others enjoy the development process.

I think your last name is cool.
Try that.
Acrhambeau Imaging
By the way, I do not think that you should let your husband deter you from naming your business as you like.

I wouldn't use your last name for the domain. Too hard to remember the spelling and too long of a name. Keep it simple.

Yea when I tell people my name they are like what, how the hell do you spell it. I was not going to resize them at all for the website. So they would be pretty large files and it would not give me much working room. I will mess with dreamweaver a bit ;-). Thanks
