Does this shot convey the differences between the old and new or does it come across as two separate shots stuck together? What I wanted was one in front of the other but the museum gets a little annoyed when photogs start rearranging the exhibits. :D

I'd say you were partially successful. There are enough differences in size, shape and angle, that the correspondence between the two bikes is a bit nebulous at first glance, but it's there, of course. The photos both show a bicycle's front yoke (is that the correct term?), brake and tire. The backgrounds are a bit distracting, too -- and different -- so that again, there is a contrast between the two photos where you don't necessarily want a contrast. So yes, the photos show the differences between old and new, but they also appear to be (and are) two separate shots in juxtaposition.

Perhaps a different crop? I'm thinking tighter to emphasize wood rims vs carbon fiber, leather brake shoe vs modern? Would it be easier on the brain to compare if one photo above the other? Just thinking out loud.
What museum is that from?

Yup totally agree with what you guys are both saying.
This is from the Deutsches Museum Verkehrszentrum in Munich. It's the transportation part of the main museum. Highly recommended if you're in Munich.

I like both the photo's, and I have to agree, the backgrounds are a little distracting...
BUT....... whatI do like is how you've got 2 photos in 1 as such......
care to explain how you did that??

I like the concept, just edit the backgrounds a bit (blur them maybe) and I think you'll have a winner.

mav it's very easy to do in PS. just paste the 2 images into a large one.

I think it would be better to have both bike in the same image as opposed to separate.

More like dirt cheap versus outrageously expensive. For anyone not into cycling, the "new" wheelset would run you up $5000. Carbon rims with carbon spokes and carbon hubs. These are the same wheels you would see the top Tour contenders riding them..... Good for the OP to be able to afford some a piece of technology...:) I hate to see it wrecked in a race or bike ride. They are not repairable....
