I'm using aperture for the raw conversion.

For extra processing the I use a subtle s-curve to make the darker colors feel a little richer. Compared to Lightroom, Aperture does have a little more saturation boost in it's default settings.

I'll edit my post above to include camera settings.

Thanks for the info. Those ISO 800 shots are very clean - I've been avoiding the higher numbers, but perhaps time to give them a go.

Don't forget to post some more shots.

One from the archives last year. I´m actually selling off this lens for a good price but is has been a good performer when used on full frame. I´m using primes more often but it´s a very versatile, fast focusing and lightweight wide-angle zoom.

I knew this lens was a keeper. Been shooting it exclusively on FF. I paid market value for it, one of the few older lenses that I have done so, but it's worth every penny. I bought it with the intention of moving to an L-series UWA but after shooting with this for a month I see no reason to spend the extra 800-1000 dollars.

The photo posted of the Petronas Towers earlier in this thread was the dealmaker in purchasing this lens.

Be sure to post a few of your first samples in this thread as you get your hands on the lens. It is really a hidden gem in the EF lineup.

Noticed you are in Salt Lake too - so you have plenty of things to photograph and post in our humble thread!

Love the sharpness on this lens right out of the camera...not a good photo - just messing around in the garage - but like to photograph text for sharpness tests and this lens never fails to impress. No sharpening or contrast added here in post...

Hi Guys,

I'm thinking of getting this lens instead of the 18-55 kit lens on my crop body.

I'm after the smallest possible lens for travel, so this seems pretty decent and the USM over the kit lens is a good bonus. Just wondering on opinions on this? Has anyone else made this move?

I gather the plasticy kit lens will really be ~29mm while the 20-35 will be 32mm so it's not that big a difference for me.

If you think of the 18-55 as really being (in terms of its quality limitations) an 18-35mm F4, the two lenses are nearly identical, but that the "kit" is wider, lighter, AND has IS....three advantages over the 20-35...

Good points, thanks for pointing that out Kitacanon.

The advantages of the 20-35mm OVER the kit lens are numerable: I would not trade a 20-35mm for 5 of the kit lenses (even with IS).

The build quality of the 20-35mm -
The lighting fast and SILENT (accurate) USM focusing motor of the 20-35mm -
The built in distance scale of the 20-35mm -
Full time manual focusing of the 20-35mm -
The image quality wide open of the 20-35mm -
The faster overall apertures of the 20-35mm -

Keep your kit lenses....this is the type of lens that Canon should be putting in the boxes with new cameras. IS on a kit lens is akin to putting a bow on a pig...

How would you say this lens compares at 20mm to the 20mm 2.8 (at equal apertures) or the Voigtlander 20mm f/3.5?

yes they are....and I still have this lens. It really is one of those sleeper lenses Canon made in the early EOS days.

How is the build quality on this lens? Is it similar or better than the 28-135?Lastly how good is the AF in terms of speed and accuracy?

I owned and liked this lens but like a fool sold it when I bought a Tamron 17-50 for my 400D, now I would like to own it again for my 1D .
Build quality is good just like all the other late 90's USM lenses Canon bought out, likewise the auto focus is as good as any L lens I have used. I feel the build of these mid level lenses designed in the days when film was still king to be better than later model designs that replaced them,,,but I may be wrong .
Between my daughter and myself we still own and use the following older design USM lenses
70-210 f3.5
28-135 is x 2
28-105 f3.5
24-85 f3.5
100 f2.0
I find the auto focus on all these to be top notch.

How would you guys compare this lens optically to the 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II? Or even other lenses? I have nothing wider than a 50mm on my 5D II and I'm finding it hard to find any used copies of lenses I want.
